{"id":14034,"date":"2021-05-07T19:35:39","date_gmt":"2021-05-08T02:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14034"},"modified":"2021-05-12T19:39:11","modified_gmt":"2021-05-13T02:39:11","slug":"thats-the-espirit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/thats-the-espirit\/","title":{"rendered":"That\u2019s the eSpirit!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We reported in the blog four years ago that Embry Riddle Aeronautical University not only displayed their <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/espirit-of-st-louis-runs-at-oshkosh\/\">eSpirit of St. Louis at AirVenture<\/a> that year, but ran the motor for the crowd.\u00a0 The crowd included Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta, who sat in the cockpit during the runup.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The eSpirit of St. Louis<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A product of Embry-Riddle, eSpirit is finally making its presence on the taxiway known.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.erau.edu\/headlines\/its-electric-four-years-of-work-culminates-in-aircraft-milestone\">Kelly Pratt, writing in the <\/a><em>Embry Riddle Aeronautical News,<\/em> reports, \u201cAfter nearly four years of perseverance, the <a href=\"https:\/\/daytonabeach.erau.edu\/about\/labs\/eagle-flight-research\">Eagle Flight Research Center<\/a> (EFRC) team at Embry-Riddle is celebrating a milestone in its electric propulsion research: its Diamond HK-36 completed a successful taxi test exclusively on electrical power at the Daytona Beach International Airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Erik Lindbergh, grandson of Charles, has been a guiding factor in eSpirit\u2019s development, and the airplane reflects his grandfather\u2019s \u201cnotion of balance between aviation and the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Electric Propulsion Taxi Test\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nOirsPqs6LE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The quarter-mile on the taxiway may seem like a short trip, but student Sanay Satam sees it as a prelude to bigger things. \u00a0An Aerospace Engineering Master\u2019s candidate, he explains, \u201cI am ecstatic that we achieved this taxi milestone and look forward to our next milestone \u2013 flight \u2013 an arduous task, but not an impossible one.\u00a0 We know the challenges that stand before us and are motivated to overcome them. It is all about the high fives at the end of the day, knowing that we were able to achieve our goals, thus fueling, or should I say, electrifying our ambition to succeed in the flight phase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Richard \u201cPat\u201d Anderson, Department of Aerospace Engineering professor and director of the EFRC, performed the taxi event.\u00a0 Joseph Thiemer, a student completing his bachelor\u2019s degree, rode shotgun, programming and monitoring parameters in the motor controller and the battery management system (BMS).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Other Embry Riddle Electrics<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Diamond HK-36 test vehicle was donated by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, and is part of an ongoing series of hybrid and electric aircraft developments by faculty and students.\u00a0 In 2011, for instance, ERAU managed to field a hybrid adaptation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/embry-riddle-begins-gfc-test-flights\/\">Eco-Eagle S10 Stemme motorglider<\/a> in the 2011 NASA Green Flight Challenge sponsored by Google.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being fourth out of four competitors that managed to make it to the starting line, ERAU\u2019s team acquitted itself well.\u00a0 Because liability considerations allowed only the pilot in the cockpit, the Eco-Eagle had a low score because the final results were based on passenger miles per gallon.\u00a0 The fact that they managed to get an airplane to California from Florida and still fly in the competition was something nine other entrants, mostly professional, did not.\u00a0 That&#8217;s how high the bar was at that time.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Embry Riddle has been busy with serial and parallel hybrid configurations.\u00a0 One result is their Heurobotics electric Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) machine.\u00a0 The carbon fiber flying wing can lift up to 115 pounds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Heurobotics Flight Demonstration\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G88ESzAzOv4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Battery Configuration<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>From the Green Flight Challenge on, <a href=\"https:\/\/daytonabeach.erau.edu\/about\/labs\/eagle-flight-research\">EFRC lists at least five electric projects<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design, build, and testing of a 100 kW serial hybrid electric powerplant.<\/li>\n<li>Design, build, and testing of an 8-rotor eVTOL handling qualities research prototype.<\/li>\n<li>Design and modification of a Diamond HK-36 motor-glider from gas to electric propulsion.\u00a0 <em>(The eSpirit)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Design, build, and flight testing of a twin rotor tail-sitter UAV.<\/li>\n<li>Design, modification, and flight of the \u201cWorld\u2019s First Parallel Direct-Drive Hybrid Aircraft\u201d for the NASA\/Google-sponsored Green Flight Challenge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_16460\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/espirit-EFRC-Pat-Anderson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16460\" class=\"wp-image-16460\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/espirit-EFRC-Pat-Anderson-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor of Aerospace Engineering Dr. Richard P. (Embry-Riddle\/David Massey)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Embry Riddle notes, \u201cThe technology employed for the eSpirit\u2019s electric motor and inverter is currently used in the automotive industry, [but] the EFRC designed its own battery packs for the aircraft. \u00a0\u00a0These are configured to allow the packs, \u201cTo conform to irregular and small spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kyle Collins, a research assistant professor at the EFRC, explains other factors in play.\u00a0 \u201cBattery weight is the critical factor when it comes to designing electric aircraft battery packs. To achieve this, the batteries operate near maximum performance and, as a result, generate heat. Care must be taken to design battery packs that can be cooled.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16462\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/espirit-battery.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16462\" class=\"wp-image-16462\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/espirit-battery.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Generation 1 eSpirit battery packs contain 84 cells, weighs 12.33 pounds. 30 are needed to fly eSpirit 1.5 hours. Gen 2 packs should be lighter, conformable to aircraft nooks and crannies<\/p><\/div>\n<p>First generation packs used in the taxi test will be replaced by a bonded cell, liquid-cooled pack, the product of new equipment and research.<\/p>\n<p>Theimer noted, \u201cAs advancements are made with battery energy density, the application of using electric motors for aircraft propulsion becomes more practical.
