{"id":14037,"date":"2021-05-10T16:06:57","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T23:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14037"},"modified":"2021-05-10T16:06:57","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T23:06:57","slug":"wrights-two-megawatts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wrights-two-megawatts\/","title":{"rendered":"From Ganged Motors to Wright&#8217;s Two MegaWatts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Twelve years ago, your editor gave his first talk at an electric aircraft symposium.\u00a0 Dr. Brien Seeley asked that he include all motors up to 100 kilowatts in his talk \u2013 at that time a rarity.\u00a0 Designers often had to \u201cgang\u201d small motors to drive a single propeller to obtain the necessary power.\u00a0 Now, Wright Electric has announced its plans to develop motors (and associated equipment) in the 500 kilowatt to 20 megawatt range.\u00a0 Motors of those sizes are still under development, but Wright claims to have t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2021\/05\/20210507-wright.html\">ested and demonstrated \u201ca megawatt-class, high performance inverter,<\/a>\u201d according to <em>Green Car Congress<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Engler is getting recognized for his vision.\u00a0 Here he give his virtual elevator speech at the Davos, World Economic Forum.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jeffrey Engler | Flights that can be electric, should be electric\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AGZYGjfbZ6k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His positive and yet measured approach seems to gain acceptance for that vision.<\/p>\n<h4>Demonstrated Performance?<\/h4>\n<p>Aiming for some audacious levels of performance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weflywright.com\/technology#propulsion\">Wright\u2019s inverter could hit these metrics<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201c99.5% efficiency &#8211;<\/strong>a 6x improvement in heat loss over current in-production aviation inverters resulting in significantly lower thermal management loads.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201c30 kw\/kg power density &#8211;<\/strong>in contrast, today\u2019s technology delivers 10-20 kw\/kg. On a standard single-aisle aircraft, this would result in a weight savings equivalent to adding an extra 5-10 passengers per flight.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Working at high frequencies, the Wright inverter has a 300 kHz high-frequency output, compared to standard inverters which have 50 kHz to 100 kHz frequencies.\u00a0 A \u201cnovel switching technology\u2026 reduces total losses for a factor of two over similarly rated systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright will next integrate the inverter with \u201can in-house developed 2 MW motor,\u201d and proceed to high altitude chamber testing, and qualification for flight readiness.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainonline.com\/aviation-news\/air-transport\/2021-05-10\/wright-electric-advances-plans-electric-airliner\">According to <em>AIN online<\/em>,<\/a> Wright hopes to test the combined inverter and motor in an airplane at 40,000 feet within the next two years.\u00a0 Jeff Engler, Wright&#8217;s founder and CEO explains, \u201cWe&#8217;re right now having those discussions about who&#8217;s going to do the manufacturing and things like that. \u00a0I think we&#8217;re heads down on proving out that the motors and inverters work on the ground and then at 40,000 feet.\u00a0 And I would say everything else is a future decision.\u201d\u00a0 Wright&#8217;s two Megawatt system would eclipse anything currently available.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16486\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/wright-inverter-simple.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16486\" class=\"wp-image-16486\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/wright-inverter-simple-528x418.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"476\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright shows this simplified sketch of their inverter, not willing yet to share the secrets to their claims<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright&#8217;s motor would operate at \u201cup to six times the voltage of existing motors, running at 1,000 Volts. \u00a0Partly because of the high operating frequencies and Voltages, the motor can be 75-percent lighter, 50-percent smaller, experience 40-percent less heat loss and offer twice the torque density of other motors.<\/p>\n<p>These characteristics help reduce the weight of the overall system, thus maximizing payload and range.\u00a0<em> AIN Online<\/em> reports the combined power density of the propulsion system could be as high as 30 kilowatts per kilogram.\u00a0 The company claims, \u201cGiven that currently, available technology delivers only between 10 and 20 kW\/kg, such an increase would result in a weight savings equivalent to carrying an extra five to 10 passengers on each flight in a standard single-aisle airplane.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>From a Shoestring to ARPA-E and Beyond<\/h4>\n<p>Starting on the proverbial shoestring in 2016, Wright is currently part of ARPA-E\u2019s ASCEND (Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, Aviation-class Synergistically Cooled Electric-motors with iNtegrated Drives) program.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16488\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Wright-system-simple-p-800.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16488\" class=\"wp-image-16488\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Wright-system-simple-p-800-528x418.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"476\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16488\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inverters seem to wrap around motor on simplified system sketch<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Besides ARPA-E\u2019s ASCEND program, Wright is funded by venture capital firms and the US government, receiving $7 million in motor\/inverter-related government contracts in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>ARPA-E defines its mission on its web site.\u00a0 \u201cThe Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) advances high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment.
