{"id":14045,"date":"2021-05-17T19:59:46","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T02:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14045"},"modified":"2021-05-17T20:07:06","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T03:07:06","slug":"air-race-e-three-classes-18-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/air-race-e-three-classes-18-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Race E: Three Classes, 18 Teams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Air Race E is gathering momentum, now comprising two airplane classes and one eVTOL (electric Vertical Take Off and Landing aircraft) class.\u00a0 Seven teams are officially entered and 11 \u201cregistered and confidential.\u201d\u00a0 Teams hail from the United States, Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Malaysia, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic.\u00a0 This worldwide interest stems from a Dubai-based headquarters and intellectual centers in Europe, America and the Far East.<\/p>\n<p>Your editor knows, for instance, that Richard Glassock is working at the University of Nottingham on a Cassutt racer intended for e-racing. That is likely just one of two British teams and one of several fielding modified cassutts, a well-proven design with a fifty-year history.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Pair of Introductions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Two videos highlight the excitement of the proposed events, but spare the more technical aspects of the sport.\u00a0 They\u2019re selling the matches to prospective spectators.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"An Electric Air Racing Revolution\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V1uSoj4Cwc4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In this longer video, Jeff Zaltman talks about the technical challenges and provides some insight into several of the competitors\u2019 designs and approaches.\u00a0 Again, note the proliferation of Cassutts involved.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Air Race E - Airplane Race as a Testbed for the Aerospace Industry\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9KTI4fzOhi0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Class Distinctions \u2013 Open Class<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/airracee.com\/classes\/\">Two fixed-wing classes<\/a> will be significantly different from one another.\u00a0 Open-class racers can be powered by any purpose-built electric motor system of up to 150 kilowatts (201 horsepower) output.\u00a0 These can include multiple motors ganged together, or for one, the M\u00b5z Motor designed by <strong>Mobius Team<\/strong> member Carl Copeland.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The sound of BUTTER...\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NPb9DB-ZNpE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This version, made of paper (!) is an early model and final race-bound units will be \u201ccellulose fiber.\u201d\u00a0 In other words \u2013 paper.\u00a0 We can only assume it will be a fairly tough variation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PIE Aeronefs<\/strong> in France is partnering with LZ-Tec s.r.o. in Czechia to power their V-tailed entry with an Emrax 348 motor.\u00a0 Success with their UR-1 could lead to a UR-2 and UR-4, both powered by distributed electric propulsion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16504\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pieaeronefs-plane-ur-1-perfil-1024x468-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16504\" class=\"wp-image-16504\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pieaeronefs-plane-ur-1-perfil-1024x468-1-528x241.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16504\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PIE UR-1 is sleek, but will have fixed gear in reality<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>French Team Scramasaxe<\/strong> (named for a type of battle axe) will probably be the only aircraft with a tricycle landing gear.\u00a0 To reduce drag, Scramasaxe will feature, \u201cAn automatic retracting and extracting triggering system for the nose wheel. This will be fun to observe. And we will make sure it works in every circumstance.\u201d<strong> \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16505\" style=\"width: 608px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Air-Race-E-SCRAMASAXE_Prospective-design-of-the-Scramasaxe-E-project-INTERNAL-USE-ONLY-889x500-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16505\" class=\" wp-image-16505\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Air-Race-E-SCRAMASAXE_Prospective-design-of-the-Scramasaxe-E-project-INTERNAL-USE-ONLY-889x500-1-528x297.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scramasaxe design will have automatically retractable\/extensible nose gear<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.french-eracer.com\/fr\/\"><strong>French E Racer<\/strong><\/a> is another Cassutt-based machine using a, \u201cPowertrain which is based on self-developed and on shelf parts.\u201d\u00a0 The team adds, &#8220;The plane that the French E-Racer team plans to build will also be a technological demonstrator and a test platform for new elements making up the architecture of its propulsion system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16506\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/french-eracer.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16506\" class=\"wp-image-16506\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/french-eracer-528x311.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"353\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16506\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">French E Racer will be fairly straightforward adaptation of Cassutt racer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yet another Cassutt racer comes from Norway, via the <a href=\"https:\/\/airracee.com\/scandinavian-aircraft-manufacturer-enters-airracee\/\"><strong>Nordic Air Racing <\/strong><\/a>team.\u00a0 Tomas Br\u00f8dreskift \u2013 Technical Manager, is of interest because he has constructed an advanced hybrid amphibian, the Equator P2.\u00a0 The team\u2019s Cassutt will have an Emrax motor and, \u201ca novel fire protection system, composed of a specific mix of lightweight materials that will protect the aircraft and pilot in case of battery fire. An important milestone already passed was the successful fire test of this novel fire protection \u2018wall.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16511\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/nordic-airrace-e-motor-battery-structure.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16511\" class=\"wp-image-16511\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/nordic-airrace-e-motor-battery-structure-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nordic Team shows how to squeeze 18 kilowatt-hours of battery into a very small airplane<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Team Bandit Racing<\/strong> is hangared at Old Warden Aerodrome, home of the Shuttleworth Trust, one of the finest aircraft collections in the world.\u00a0 (Your editor\u2019s been there.)\u00a0 \u201cBandit\u201d refers to the sports car built there, to be released this month and a worthy companion to the Air Racer E also housed there.\u00a0 It shares a love of technology.\u00a0 \u201cBuyers will be able to choose between liquid-fueled engines, a hydrogen cell or full electric.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16512\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Kennet-Sea-Spitfire.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16512\" class=\"wp-image-16512\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Kennet-Sea-Spitfire-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team Bandit hasn&#8217;t share images of their Bullet, but the same team restored this Supermarine Seafire<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The team apparently shares space and talent with Kennet Aviation, a full-service aircraft restoration firm.\u00a0 They make CNC and specially-machined parts for antiques, and have restored aircraft such as the Supermarine Seafire.\u00a0 Their aircraft, called the Berkeley Bullet, will be launched almost simultaneously with the Bandit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team NL<\/strong>, despite its Netherlands headquarters, \u201cIs an international team, with members from the Netherlands, England, and Poland. We are always keen to involve anyone who shares our interest in sustainable electric aircraft racing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16507\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/air-race-e-team-NL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16507\" class=\"wp-image-16507\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/air-race-e-team-NL-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team NL&#8221;s distinctive airplane with a distinctive paint job in artist&#8217;s rendering<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Perhaps the most distinctive aircraft, aside from the Aeronef PIE UR-1, Team NL\u2019s racer is a stunning shape with contra-rotating propellers and at least in the artist\u2019s rendering, an eye-catching color scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Just large enough to fit its pilot, Team NL\u2019s entry features a unique power system.\u00a0 \u201cThe propulsion system consists of two motors driving a contra-rotating propeller set. This adds redundancy into the propulsion system. This system is going to be fully electric. At max throttle there will be 150KW power available to the pilot!\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>On To the Performance and Vertical Classes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>These seven teams are the frontrunners at this point, and emulate some of the characteristics of Formula E car racing.\u00a0 That has moved from an almost one-design basis to enabling teams to design their cars and power systems.\u00a0 The Performance Class for Air Race E will be closer to Formula E\u2019s original concept, supplying a standard motor and power system for each racer.<\/p>\n<p>Vertical class will be the wildest card in the new deck.\u00a0 Organizers describe it this way. \u201cThe electric VTOL class is an entirely different category of aircraft altogether. Often referred as \u2018flying cars\u2019, this type or aircraft is at the forefront of electric technology in aerospace.
