{"id":14118,"date":"2021-07-13T15:25:50","date_gmt":"2021-07-13T22:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14118"},"modified":"2021-07-13T15:25:50","modified_gmt":"2021-07-13T22:25:50","slug":"going-big-and-bigger-with-hydrogen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/going-big-and-bigger-with-hydrogen\/","title":{"rendered":"Going Big and Bigger with Hydrogen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two companies promoting hydrogen power for aircraft are upsizing their aspirations, with aircraft\u00a0 hauling four to up to 40 passengers.\u00a0 Both have ambitious timelines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroavia.com\/\">ZeroAvia,<\/a> operating in Hollister, California and Cirencester, England has been flying a Piper Malibu demonstrator, but anticipates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroavia.com\/19-seater-release\">flying a 10 to 20 passenger Dornier by 2024<\/a>.\u00a0 It would expand that to a 50-passenger craft by 2026.\u00a0 H2Fly in Germany has been flying their Pipistrel-designed HY4 for several years and through six generations. The firm looks forward to taking incremental steps toward a 40-passenger regional airliner by 2030.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>ZeroAvia <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>ZeroAvia reports on troubling trends in aviation\u2019s contribution to greenhouse gases, but follows with a possible solution.\u00a0 According to their web site, aviation accounts for over 12 percent of total transportation emissions, and may double that by 2050.\u00a0 High altitude contrails mean aviation emissions have two to four times the effect of ground source emissions.\u00a0 Regulators want drastic changes.\u00a0 The European Union mandates a one quarter the CO2 and one-tenth the nitrogen oxides from aircraft by 2050. ZeroAvia is focused on the short haul segment because half of emissions are from flights shorter than 1000 miles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16778\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Global-CO2-emissions-from-aviation-768x610-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16778\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16778\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Global-CO2-emissions-from-aviation-768x610-1-528x419.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"419\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Short haul segment is most important to address: half of emissions are from flights shorter than 1000 miles. according to ZeroAvia<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>ZeroAvia\u2019s solution is to create an ever-larger, longer-range group of aircraft to meet transportation needs at every level.<\/p>\n<p>In a two-pronged effort, ZeroAvia is converting two Dornier 228, 19-seat aircraft to hydrogen power. \u00a0The company reports, \u201cTo continue the company\u2019s trajectory toward zero-emission flight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroavia.com\/\">ZeroAvia<\/a> is ramping up its 19-seat aircraft program to decarbonize and revolutionize regional air travel. The company will utilize two twin-engine 19-seat Dornier 228 aircraft \u2013 one in the UK and one in the US, provided respectively by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alternativeairlines.com\/aurigny\">Aurigny (an airline on the channel isle of Guernsey)<\/a> and AMC Aviation. Both aircraft were previously in service for regional flights in the US and UK, demonstrating the opportunity for carbon reduction on existing routes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ZeroAvia\u2019s initial demonstrations using a Piper Malibu were dubbed HyFlyer I.\u00a0 The new phase, HyFlyer II, is part of a program backed by the United Kingdom government to develop a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain.\u00a0 Lessons learned from the first phase will be incorporated into development of a<a href=\"https:\/\/longtailpipe.com\/2019\/08\/14\/fuel-cell-airplane-maker-zeroavia-taking-on-mid-range-commercial-air-travel\/\"> 600 kilowatt powerplant to be used in the 19-seat Dornier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16765\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/zeroavia-drive-train-1024x662-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16765\" class=\"wp-image-16765\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/zeroavia-drive-train-1024x662-1-528x341.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ZeroAvia&#8217;s drive train.\u00a0 Twin units on Dornier 228 will be 600 kW (804 hp) each.\u00a0 We look forward to getting more details on ZeroAvia&#8217;s H2 motors, which look different from more conventional electric powerplants<\/p><\/div>\n<p>LongTailPipe. com explains, \u201cIt looks like immediately behind the propeller is an electric motor, with no gearing between the motor and the propeller shaft. Immediately behind that is what looks like an inverter (motor controller) with cables connecting it with the motor. I\u2019m wondering about the color choices in the wiring harness, since I understood it is required to use orange cables for high voltage wires so that technicians know which cable is dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind that is a blue box. Might that be the fuel cell stack?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides the motor and the inverter, there are three or four major components that must exist:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cHydrogen storage tanks \u2014 most likely in the wings or where ever the gas tank is in this airplane.\u00a0 (ZeroAvia has a diagram of the H2 tank locations on the airplane, as shown below.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_16766\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/zeroavia-malibu-fuelcell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16766\" class=\"wp-image-16766\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/zeroavia-malibu-fuelcell-528x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ZeroAvia Malibu H2 tanks, which take up considerable room<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cFuel cell stack<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOverall system control electronics, as well as avionics in the cockpit<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSmall battery pack to buffer energy from fuel cell for driving the motor&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Part of <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroavia.com\/press-release-hyflyer-2-grant\">HyFlyer II<\/a><\/u>, the second ZeroAvia-led project backed by the UK Government to target the development of a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain. &#8220;As part of HyFlyer I, ZeroAvia successfully demonstrated a 250kW powerplant in a 6-seat aircraft across three flight test campaigns, achieving all the project\u2019s technical goals, including fuel-cell only cruise flight.&#8221;\u00a0 Lessons learned from the HyFlyer I program will be incorporated in powering the Dornier 228s.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b<a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/zeroavia-timeline.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16772\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/zeroavia-timeline-528x277.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Where is the company getting funding for its programs?\u00a0 &#8220;ZeroAvia has also secured an additional $13 million for its 50+ seat engine development program from <u><a href=\"https:\/\/apventures.com\/\">AP Ventures<\/a><\/u>, a significant investor in breakthrough technologies across the hydrogen value chain,\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avgfunds.com\/\">Alumni Ventures Group<\/a><\/u>,\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sghcapital.com\/\">SGH Capital<\/a><\/u>, Agartha Fund LP, and existing investors\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.aboutamazon.com\/about\/climate-pledge-fund\">Amazon\u2019s Climate Pledge Fund<\/a><\/u>,\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughenergy.org\/\">Breakthrough Energy Ventures<\/a><\/u>,\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/summaequity.com\/\">Summa Equity<\/a><\/u>,\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/energy-and-innovation\/new-energies\/shell-ventures.html\">Shell Ventures<\/a><\/u>,\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.systemiq.earth\/\">SYSTEMIQ<\/a><\/u>, and\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horizonsventures.com\/\">Horizons Ventures<\/a><\/u>. This new funding complements the initial investment of $24 million the company announced a few weeks ago, bringing the total private investment into ZeroAvia large engine development for 50+ seat aircraft to $37 million.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>H2Fly&#8217;s 19-seat Dornier\u00a0 228 will replace the two turbine engines with 600KW units of the company&#8217;s hydrogen-electric powertrain.\u00a0 \u00a0hydrogen fuel tanks eventually holding 100kg of compressed gaseous hydrogen to support the 500-mile range of the commercial offering in 2024. Additionally, ZeroAvia is progressing the software, hardware, mechanical integration, and fuel cell balance-of-plant to the certifiable state. The 6-ton aircraft will have a range of 500 nautical miles.<\/p>\n<h4>H2Fly<\/h4>\n<p>H2Fly is the outgrowth of work done by Germany&#8217;s DLR (Deutsches Zentrum f\u00fcr Luft- und Raumfahrt, or <span class=\"thin\">German Aerospace Center).\u00a0 Headed by Joseph Kallo and using the Pipistrel G4 that had won the NASA Green Flight Challenge (sponsored by Google) in 2011.\u00a0 \u00a0the battery-powered G4 was converted to hydrogen powered HY4 and has gone through six iterations as a test bed for H2 aerial transport since 2016.\u00a0 In one test series, it made 32 takeoffs in four days, showing the ability to refuel quickly. H2Fly reports that since then, &#8220;From 4th of November 2020 till 23rd of November 2020 the 6th generation of hydrogen powertrain made over 35 take offs, flying up to 2 hours per flight.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hy4 - Hydrogen Electric Fuel Cell Propulsion #h2fly #Hy4 #hydrogen\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZtQvDUN2ukE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>From that well-tested beginning, H2Fly anticipates flying a series of ever-larger craft.\u00a0 The four-seat Air Taxi, slated for 2025, would incorporate redundant H2 storage, 350 kilowatt (469 horsepower) motors (200 kW or 268 hp. at cruise), and a range of up to 250 kilometers (155 miles) within its 1.5 hours maximum endurance.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-14118-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/h2fly.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Rotaz-4posti-1.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/h2fly.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Rotaz-4posti-1.mp4\">https:\/\/h2fly.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Rotaz-4posti-1.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>By 2027, H2Fly anticipates flying a six-to-19 seat fixed-wing commuter.\u00a0 With 425 kW (570 hp.) full power and 300 kW (402 hp.) at cruise, the commuter can travel up to 1,500 kilometers ( 932 miles) at a maximum cruise speed of 370 kilometers per hour (230 mph).\u00a0 The fixed-wing aerodynamics help achieve excellent range.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-14118-2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/h2fly.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/6seats-rotaz-1.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/h2fly.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/6seats-rotaz-1.mp4\">https:\/\/h2fly.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/6seats-rotaz-1.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>This would lead, by 2030, to a 40-seat commuter liner powered by three megawatts (4,023 hp.).\u00a0 One a cruise power of 1.4 mW (1,877 hp.), the liner could fly at 520 km.\/hr (323 mph) for up to 1,850 km.
