{"id":14120,"date":"2021-07-17T22:16:15","date_gmt":"2021-07-18T05:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14120"},"modified":"2021-07-17T22:18:45","modified_gmt":"2021-07-18T05:18:45","slug":"take-heart-united-we-fly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/take-heart-united-we-fly\/","title":{"rendered":"Take Heart!\u00a0 United We Fly!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Heart Aerospace, on the airport at Gothenburg Airport in southern Sweden, wants to bring inexpensive, four-motor electric flight to the masses.\u00a0 With $35 million (29.4 million euros) in recently acquired backing, the small team at Heart is working toward making a 19-passenger, four-motor airliner a reality.\u00a0 Their ES-19 is a single-aisle design with eight-rows of single seats and three-seat row at the cabin\u2019s rear.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Electrification Insiders | episode 4 \u00b7 Heart Aerospace, with Anders Forslund (Founder &amp; CEO)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9wJjXBiWWJQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Those 19 seats are a selling point, with United Airlines signing purchase contracts for 100 of the $ 9 million machines.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesa-air.com\/\">Mesa Airlines<\/a> follows suit for another 100 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finnair.com\/us-en\/bluewings\/sustainability\/finnair-strengthens-collaboration-with-pioneering-electric-aviation-startup-heart-aerospace--2253482\">Finnair, Finland\u2019s national airline<\/a>, has expressed interest in another 20.\u00a0 Funding from Bill Gates\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2021\/07\/14\/heart-aerospace-announces-fresh-capital-and-new-orders\/\">Breakthrough Energy Ventures and other investors totals over $35 million<\/a>.\u00a0 For a niche market, the possibilities are expansive, with many small airlines flying short routes ready for such a craft.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16791\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/HEART_INT_04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16791\" class=\"wp-image-16791\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/HEART_INT_04-528x324.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"368\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tidy interior features 30-inch pitch between seats. Most airlines feature 29 to 31-inches<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Heart sees the 19-seat market as promising, since few 19-seat commuter liners exist anymore.\u00a0 Part of that is economic, with small turboprops being nearly as expensive to run as larger ones.\u00a0 Electric powerplants would lower total operating costs and help restore previously unprofitable routes to more destinations.\u00a0 In your editor\u2019s view, four small electric motors, with controllers, battery management systems and battery packs tucked into each nacelle, could lower total cost and spread aircraft weight along the span.\u00a0 The design allows for \u201cblown lift,\u201d a feature other makers tout for their short take off and landing (STOL) designs.<\/p>\n<p>Mesa Airlines sees new hope for currently unserved communities.\u00a0 \u201cMesa was the world\u2019s largest operator of 19-seat aircraft and has unparalleled expertise in connecting smaller communities to the national transportation system. Over the past 30 years, as the economics of operating 19-seat aircraft became uneconomic, operators exited markets and practically all 19 seat aircraft have been withdrawn from commercial service. For example, Farmington, New Mexico, a rural community bordering the Navajo Nation, previously had over 30 daily departures to seven destinations. Today, Farmington has no scheduled passenger service. The reduced operating costs of the ES-19 aircraft hold the promise of revitalizing travel options that are currently not economically viable with traditional aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16788\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/heart-euro-map.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16788\" class=\"wp-image-16788\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/heart-euro-map.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"845\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map includes routes Finnair ceded to another carrier, showing need for short-range transport<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Similar hopes are expressed for European routes over mountains and across waterways that would otherwise consume hours by bus, car, or boat.<\/p>\n<p>The firm has an obviously talented crew, boasting personnel who\u2019ve worked on over 100 aeronautical projects.\u00a0 Initially, 400 kilowatt motors, controllers, and battery packs will be in-house designed and built.\u00a0 Later components for a more powerful version will be sourced like a popular plastic brick maker\u2019s products.\u00a0 \u201cMoreover, an aircraft is a Lego kit of different components manufactured by different suppliers. Heart Aerospace is working with the same suppliers as the established aerospace companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What\u2019s Coming<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The pre-prototype being built in-house will be powered by four 400 kW motors each driven by four 180 kilowatt-hour batteries mounted in the nacelles behind the motor and controller.<\/p>\n<p>This craft will have a top speed of 215 knots (247 mph) and cruise at 180 knots (207 mph).\u00a0 It can land and take off on an 800-meter (2,625 feet) runway, common enough on airports for small aircraft.\u00a0 The prop wash over a good percentage of the wing and high-lift flaps will aid in short-field operations.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, efficiencies are high, with propellers returning 88 percent, motors converting 97-percent of current that reaches them to useful power, and motor controllers hitting 99.7-percent efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Heart explains the economies of operation for their craft.\u00a0 &#8220;Our electric motor is about 20 times less expensive than a similarly-size turboprop, and about a 100 times less expensive than the cheapest turbofan. More importantly, maintenance costs are more than 100 times lower.
