{"id":14145,"date":"2021-07-31T23:43:07","date_gmt":"2021-08-01T06:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14145"},"modified":"2021-07-31T23:43:07","modified_gmt":"2021-08-01T06:43:07","slug":"nine-engines-two-wings-dep-antonov","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/nine-engines-two-wings-dep-antonov\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine Engines and Two Wings \u2013 the DEP Antonov"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sporting no less than nine powerplants, eight of which are electric, a cold-war biplane stunned the crowd at a Russian air show.\u00a0 Part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/aviasalon.com\/en\/\">15th International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS 2021<\/a> held on July 20-25, a Siberian adaptation of a Russian classic drew widespread attention.\u00a0 Your editor has had the privilege of enjoying two flights in the original giant AN-2 biplane powered by a Schwezow ASch-62IR nine-cylinder radial engine with 1000 horsepower.\u00a0 That engine sounded like a freight train grumbling through the valley over which we flew.\u00a0 This new version has a 1,100 shaft horsepower Honeywell turbine in the nose and eight motors with folding propellers arrayed along the lower wing. \u00a0The sound is futuristic, while the airframe is anachronistic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u041a\u0443\u043a\u0443\u0440\u0443\u0437\u043d\u0438\u043a \u0441 9-\u044e \u043c\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0430\u043c\u0438. \u0420\u0430\u0437\u0431\u0435\u0433 6 \u0441\u0435\u043a\u0443\u043d\u0434 \/ 60 \u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0432. \u041c\u0410\u041a\u0421 2021 \/ \u0422\u0412\u0421-2\u041c\u0421 (\u0410\u043d-2)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sI32NIvjvic?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Electric-Flight.eu<\/em> headlines its coverage with, \u201cRussians impress with blown-lift technology on old double-deckers.\u201d\u00a0 Think of an imposing biplane standing almost 14 feet tall, carrying a total wing area of 71.52 square meters (769.8 square feet) and hauling 12 to 14 fully-armed troops into combat.\u00a0 Despite its lumbering speed, this must have seemed like a good idea to Soviet military planners, since they had 18,000 built \u2013 roughly equivalent to B-24 production in WWII.<\/p>\n<p>The electric motors arranged symmetrically under the leading edge of the lower wing blow across a wing area of only 14.24 square meters (153.28 square feet), but seem to make the five-second takeoff roll a non-event.\u00a0 Along with a steep climb that would clear trees or other obstructions along a jungle clearing, the airplane would make a great search and rescue craft, or could carry large loads to remote sites.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>A Ninth Decade<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>Routesonline.com<\/em> reports, \u201cThe Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute, named after S. A. Chaplygin (SibNIA), believes its TVS-2MS turboprop conversion of the classic Antonov An-2 piston airliner could prolong the life of the venerable aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routesonline.com\/news\/29\/breaking-news\/267625\/sibnia-pitches-an-2-turboprop-conversion-for-african-missions\/\">into a ninth decade, with Africa a strong potential market<\/a> for the modernized airplane.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16834\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/antonov-electric-under-view.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16834\" class=\"wp-image-16834\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/antonov-electric-under-view-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Antonov showed ability to hang on all nine props during airshow demonstration<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As with many Russian aircraft, Antonovs are hell for stout, and the leader at SibNIA knows that the plane is outstanding in its literal field.\u00a0 \u201cWe often talk about point-to-point and regional to hub feed, but the SibNIA TVS-2MS truly offers a field to airport offer to the market and when we say field we do not just mean small rural airfields, it can freely operate from grass strips with its excellent short-field performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thinking at a more bucolic than urban level, the Institute\u2019s designers see the big bird also levitating from rooftops, fulfilling a mission to perhaps alleviate ground traffic in Moscow and St. Petersburg.\u00a0 This would require propping up roof beams, of course.<\/p>\n<p>The TVS-2MS, stipulated to land and take off in the same area usually intended for the MI-8 helicopter (30 by 50 meters or 98 by 164 feet), is being followed by the TVS-2DT, a fully composite biplane.\u00a0 It must clear a 15-meter obstruction at the edges of the \u201cfield,\u201d which is not tidily defined.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16835\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/antonov-composite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16835\" class=\"wp-image-16835\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/antonov-composite-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16835\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SIbniA has also crafted the TVS-2DT, an all composite, turboprop version of AN-2<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The nine-motor monster will probably not be a production craft,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flugrevue.de\/zivil\/ultra-kurzstarter-partizan-turboprop-hybrid-an-2-mit-neun-propellern\/\"> but may presage further, sleeker developments<\/a>.\u00a0 An AN-3 lurks in the wings and several concepts await in a hazy future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fnine-engines-two-wings-dep-antonov%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
