S. Navy to provide ultra-persistent flight capabilities.\u00a0 It\u2019s using Solar Impulse Two, for which Skydweller purchased the assets and intellectual property rights.\u00a0 Being flown in Spain at this time, the aircraft\u2019s 2,900 square feet of solar cells provide two kilowatts of power, and may be augmented by hydrogen fuel cells in future.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>In Spain<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Skydweller founders John Parkes and Robert Miller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviationtoday.com\/2020\/06\/30\/ultra-persistent-skydweller-aero-announces-oklahoma-city-as-headquarters\/\">have headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but are performing flight tests in Spain<\/a>, coordinating efforts with the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Skydweller Aero Albacete Airport Ground Testing\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3exwylZ6pqY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After successfully completing ground tests that checked the structure and control systems, Skydweller works toward crafting the software that will guide it on unpiloted missions, scheduled to last at least 30 to 60 days. \u00a0Such persistence, long sought by the military for ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) missions, is also essential for many future civilian applications.\u00a0 Co-founder John Parkes explained this to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviationtoday.com\/2020\/06\/30\/ultra-persistent-skydweller-aero-announces-oklahoma-city-as-headquarters\/\"><em>Aviation Today<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cThere are certainly differentiated missions that Skydweller can do that no other aircraft can do, but the core of it really is doing things that we do today better, smarter, cheaper, more effectively.\u00a0 And that is communications \u2014 being a node in the sky whether for the military and first responder market or for the telecom world. And for the military specifically, doing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions from an airborne perspective more effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Certainly recent disasters such as the Bootleg and Dixie fires, which encompass broad areas and last weeks or even months, will require an \u201ceye-in-the-sky\u201d to help everyone from first responders to those performing reclamation efforts.\u00a0 The idea of being able to observe in many spectrums can help speed search and rescue work, find lost or endangered people, and spot incipient hazards.\u00a0 The possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Skydweller Aero Talks Software Development\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wSCbaAtFt8U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Non-Predatory Behavior<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>Aviation Today<\/em> reports, \u201cWith 800 lbs of payload capacity, the drone can carry more radar and camera equipment than a MQ-1 Predator, whose primary role is reconnaissance and surveillance, though not as much as an MQ-9 Reaper, which often carries armaments as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. Air Force recently announced it is looking for a Reaper replacement \u2014 called \u201cMQ-X\u201d \u2014 to enter service around 2031. Though the Skydweller wouldn\u2019t be able to fulfill all of the capabilities of the Reaper, as it isn\u2019t designed to carry armaments, it could offer greatly reduced complexity and operating costs for ISR missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Systems Engineering Exercise<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Skydweller Aero Autonomous Software Flight Test - April 2021\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lYAA0HlJzUw?start=3&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Parkes does not expect Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approval or certification soon, but does anticipate they will grant waivers for communications applications.\u00a0 The aircraft is slated to meet FAA Part 23 certification requirements, however.<\/p>\n<p>Integrating \u201cits autonomy systems and ultra-redundant flight control systems\u2026comprise the bulk of the [new] company\u2019s engineering investment.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardocompany.com\/en\/home\"> Italian aerospace giant Leonardo<\/a> invested in Skydweller and owns about 17 percent of the firm while controlling one of the seven board seats.\u00a0 Skydweller raised a total of $32 million in its Series A fundraising, so it would seem well established.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>College Links in Castile<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclm.es\/noticias\/noticias2021\/junio\/albacete\/uclm_skydweller#\">A recent meeting between Skydweller and members of the University of Castilla-La Mancha planned,<\/a> \u201cFuture collaborations on innovation, employment and internships for university students.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14159\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14159\" class=\"wp-image-14159\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Skydweller-upgrades-528x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Skydweller-upgrades-528x281.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Skydweller-upgrades-300x159.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Skydweller-upgrades-768x408.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Skydweller-upgrades-1536x816.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Skydweller-upgrades-2048x1088.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Proposed changes for Skydweller<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Government of Castilla-La Mancha has declared the future building of solar drones as a priority.\u00a0 \u00a0Their base will be located in the town of Valdepe\u00f1as (Ciudad Real), with the intent of \u201creactivating\u201d economic development in the area.\u00a0 It\u2019s not stated whether the solar drones will be patterned after Skydweller or will be of different configurations.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Meanwhile, Back in Oklahoma<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.okstate.edu\/articles\/engineering-architecture-technology\/2021\/electric_motor_donation_marks_beginning_of_skydweller_aero_and_osu_partnership.html\">An electric motor that circumnavigated the globe by air in Solar Impulse 2<\/a> will soon have a new permanent home at Oklahoma State University.\u00a0 Donated by Skydweller, the motor will reside at the school\u2019s Unmanned Systems Research Institute (USRI).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16864\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/skydweller-motor-OSU.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16864\" class=\"wp-image-16864\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/skydweller-motor-OSU-528x271.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Well traveled, one of Solar Impulse 2&#8217;s motors will help Oklahoma students gain insight into electric aviation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Jamey Jacob, OSU professor of aerospace engineering and director of USRI explains, \u201cWe are excited to be working with Skydweller Aero on their advanced technology.
