{"id":14174,"date":"2021-08-19T15:47:50","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T22:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14174"},"modified":"2021-08-19T15:47:50","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T22:47:50","slug":"embraer-electrifies-agricultural-aviation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/embraer-electrifies-agricultural-aviation\/","title":{"rendered":"Embraer Electrifies Agricultural Aviation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Embraer, a Brazilian aircraft maker with ties to Boeing, has been tilling the clean aviation field for several years.\u00a0 Their current agricultural craft, the EMB 203, has flown on ethanol for some years \u2013 a kind of farm-to-aircraft symbiotic relationship.\u00a0 Going to the next step toward clean, green aviation, Embraer has since devised an electrical powertrain in cooperation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weg.net\/institutional\/BR\/pt\/\"><em>WEG Equipamentos El\u00e9tricos<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/brasil.edp.com\/en\">EDP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16912\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Embraer-Electric-Agplane-low-pass.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16912\" class=\"wp-image-16912\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Embraer-Electric-Agplane-low-pass-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16912\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Embraer EMB 203 making low pass along runway at Sao Paolo factory<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Embraer is deeply involved in programs headed toward making the skies greener.\u00a0 This includes everything from their aircraft designs to their \u201cDIPAS PROGRAM &#8211; DIPAS (Integrated Development of an Environmentally Sustainable Product).\u201d\u00a0 This program considers \u201ccurrent and future environmental legislation,\u201d alternative technologies and their life cycles.\u00a0 The program works toward reducing fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, noise, and maintenance costs, while, \u201cIncreasing operational efficiency and comfort for the pilot and passengers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other operations to incorporate electrification of flight include Embraer X\u2019s Eve, the company\u2019s approach to urban aerial mobility, and other efforts to offset or mitigate harmful emissions.\u00a0 \u201cEmbraer says it will develop a range of products, services, and disruptive sustainable technologies, such as electrification, hybrid, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other energy alternatives. The company claims it will also offset any residual emissions that cannot be reduced through efficiency projects, available alternative energy or advancing technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Plane from Ipanema<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/embraer.com\/global\/en\/agricultural-aviation\">Flying since 2004 on ethanol<\/a>, the predecessor to the current EMB 203 was an early attempt to reduce carbon emissions.\u00a0 Some find this approach controversial, since ethanol production often entails converting food crops such as corn into aviation fuel.\u00a0 Electricity can be obtained from more sustainable resources, and thus might be more acceptable to environmentalists and those worried about feeding a hungry world.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Electric Demonstrator\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LPAPt5kDwpU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The base design has been flying since 1970, and Embraer plans to use it as a testbed for electric power.\u00a0 Its payload of 950 kilograms (2,094 pounds) is great for spraying large fields, and highly useful for carrying a large battery pack.\u00a0 EDP-funded batteries combined with the \u201cvery light electric motor [from] the large Brazilian electrical company WEG\u201d will allow enhanced endurance.\u00a0 Technology developed on the Ipanema will be transferred to use on the EVE eVTOL (electric Vertical Take Off and Landing) project and probable future electric projects.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Urban air mobility applications with eVTOL aircraft by Embraer\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DUPoPEoTylU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Luis Carlos Affonso, Vice President for Technology and Development at Embraer, explains the importance of the Ipanema.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/embraer.com\/global\/en\/news?slug=1206909-embraers-electric-demonstrator-aircraft-begins-flight-test-campaign\">\u201cThe first flight of an aircraft is always an important milestone<\/a> and the start of our first of\u2026 ten emission-free electric aircraft is also an important contribution of our teams and partners on the energy transition in the industry.
