{"id":14186,"date":"2021-08-24T15:54:58","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T22:54:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14186"},"modified":"2021-08-24T17:33:34","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T00:33:34","slug":"stable-nickel-rich-cathodes-lithium-metal-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/stable-nickel-rich-cathodes-lithium-metal-batteries\/","title":{"rendered":"Stable Nickel-rich Cathodes in Lithium Metal Batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A battery with 560 Watt-hours per kilogram, a stable long life, and no fires.\u00a0 What\u2019s not to like?\u00a0 Researchers at Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU), founded by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in cooperation with the University of Ulm, have come up with a dual anion, nickel-rich cathode, lithium-metal battery that, although in early stages of development, may point a way forward.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/joule\/fulltext\/S2542-4351(21)00302-0?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2542435121003020%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\">Academic journal <em>Joule<\/em> reports<\/a>, \u201cHigh-energy batteries, in particular lithium batteries, are the key to achieve carbon-neutral mobility\u2026. However, it is foreseen that a fully electrified mobility and transportation can only be achieved by the development of batteries employing lithium metal as the negative electrode (anode) while still granting long-term cycling performance and safety.\u201d\u00a0 Safety may be the deciding factor here, especially in electric aircraft.\u00a0 \u00a0Coupling the lithium metal anode with a nickel rich cathode seems to pay off for the researchers.\u00a0 Along with the dual anion liquid electrolytes, they&#8217;ve managed to keep things stable and performing well.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the visual impact of recent car fires on the nightly news, and instructions to park your EV outside, buyers might be forgiven for a certain reluctance to embrace an attractive, but iffy, new vehicle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16933\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HIU-dual-anion-battery.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16933\" class=\"wp-image-16933\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HIU-dual-anion-battery-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Helmholz Institute Ulm (HIU) has come up with a battery that can store 560 Watt-hours per kilogram, according to their paper.\u00a0 It retains 88 percent capacity after 1,000 cycles<\/p><\/div>\n<p>(As always, your editor is quick to point out 589 fossil-fuel powered cars <em>per day<\/em> self-immolated in one recent year.)\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/19\/fires-probes-recalls-automakers-spend-billions-in-shift-to-evs.html#:~:text=Vehicle%20fires%20are%20common%2C%20generally,in%20the%20U.S.%20in%202018.\">CNBC points out<\/a>, \u201cVehicle fires are common, generally. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there were\u00a0212,500 vehicle fires that caused 560 civilian deaths, 1,500 civilian injuries and $1.9 billion in direct property damage in the U.S. in 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>More Energy, More Risk<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Batteries seem to be the never-ending thorn in electric flight\u2019s side.\u00a0 As batteries gain energy, they seem to become more flammable.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/528025\/expands-battery-recall-bolt-ev\/\">An ongoing recall by GM has virtually pulled all Chevy Bolts<\/a> off the road, battery manufacturing defects getting the blame.\u00a0 While the car company is footing the bill (over $1 billion) to replace offending battery packs, battery fire anxiety may replace range anxiety for EV owners.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16934\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HIU-performance.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16934\" class=\"wp-image-16934\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HIU-performance-528x335.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"381\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stability over its life cycle is a primary feature of HIU&#8217;s battery using dual-anion ionic liquid electrolyte (ILE)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Researchers employed a cobalt-poor, nickel rich negative electrode (anode) material along with a dual-anion ionic liquid electrolyte [ILE].\u00a0 According to the <em>Joule<\/em> entry, \u201cThis electrolyte enables initial specific capacity of 214 mAh g<sup>\u22121<\/sup> and outstanding capacity retention of 88% over 1,000 cycles with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.94%. Even if they quoted the Lithium full cell energy density, it is still only a lab specimen. Until a fully developed pouch or cylindrical cell is produced, you can only estimate battery energy density.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCuberg does have a product with a <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/cuberg-batteries-some-real-numbers\/\">369 Wh\/kg energy density (though poor cycle life).<\/a> Depending on the configuration (pouch, 2170, 4680, etc.) energy density would be in this range. The HIU research extended the cycle life by using a dual-anion ionic liquid electrolyte.\u201d\u00a0 Combining findings by researchers with commercial developments may be a way forward.\u00a0 Whether Cuberg (and by acquisition, Northvolt) uses a similar chemistry or a nickel rich cathode is not known.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Swedish Acquisition of Cuberg<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Good news comes through in that regard.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/cuberg.net\/news\/northvolt-acquires-cuberg\">Northvolt, a Swedish company, acquired Cuberg<\/a>, a California-based battery developer.\u00a0 Cuberg has been working closely with Boeing and other customers, including BETA Technologies, Ampaire, and VoltAero. The company\u2019s investors and financial backers include Boeing HorizonX Ventures, Activate.org, the California Energy Commission, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the TomKat Center at Stanford.<\/p>\n<p>Northvolt has plants in Sweden, Germany, and Poland among other locations, and will, \u201cEstablish an advanced technology center in Silicon Valley based on the Cuberg acquisition and is actively hiring top battery industry talent to support these efforts.\u201d\u00a0 Acting as a bridge between European and North American battery development, the center will, \u201cBridge ongoing research efforts between Europe and North America.
