{"id":14194,"date":"2021-08-29T13:40:38","date_gmt":"2021-08-29T20:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14194"},"modified":"2021-08-29T13:40:38","modified_gmt":"2021-08-29T20:40:38","slug":"sion-powers-ev-battery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/sion-powers-ev-battery\/","title":{"rendered":"Sion Power\u2019s EV Battery"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Sion Power\u2019s EV Battery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>400 Watt-hours per kilogram is a long-awaited minimum expectation for what it will take to get electric aviation off the ground.\u00a0 Sion Power<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> of Tucson, Arizona will introduce its Licerion<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> 17 Amp-hour pouch cells at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebatteryshow.com\/en\/home.html\">Battery Show North America<\/a> in September \u2013 claiming to fulfill that expectation.\u00a0 The large-format pouch cells come in a compact 810 Watt-hours per liter size, last over 800 cycles and can be charged to 80-percent of their rated capacity in 15 minutes, according to Sion.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zephyr\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VV6MB5XCTfw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sion Power is shifting from its lithium-sulfur chemistry to lithium-metal technology.\u00a0 Their Li-S cells powered Airbus\u2019 Zephyr<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> 7 HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellite) to a record for continuous flight.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/tucson.com\/business\/tucson-tech-sion-power-looks-to-deliver-more-battery-power-for-drones-electric-cars\/article_113b4605-681d-5fc9-8336-f64b2cbac7bd.html\">According to <em>Tucson Tech<\/em>,<\/a> \u201cIn 2014, lithium-sulfur batteries custom-made by Sion helped power Airbus\u2019 Zephyr 7 solar-electric unmanned plane to fly for 11 days on sun power during the day and battery power at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>From Lithium-Sulfur to Licerion<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In a paper on the subject, Sion Power explains its change from lithium-sulfur to its current approach.\u00a0 \u201cHowever, even with this success, Sion Power was aware of an intrinsic weakness with Li-S that limited its usefulness for most applications. In 2015, Sion Power began research and development work on its next-generation rechargeable cell that overcame the limitations of Li-S.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16958\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sion-power-licerion-cross-section.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16958\" class=\"wp-image-16958\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sion-power-licerion-cross-section.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16958\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cross section of Licerion cell includes lithium metal anode, and a lot of proprietary materials<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sion has created three levels of protection for safe storage of energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2021\/08\/20210824-sion.html\">as reported in <em>GreenCarCongress.com<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At the cell-level, electrolyte additives chemically stabilize the anode surface to enhance cycle life and increase energy.
