{"id":14214,"date":"2021-09-14T07:58:41","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T14:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14214"},"modified":"2021-09-14T07:59:48","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T14:59:48","slug":"storedot-silicon-tin-fast-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/storedot-silicon-tin-fast-charge\/","title":{"rendered":"Storedot: Silicon and Tin for a Fast Charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Storedot is an Israeli battery company with an appealing sales pitch \u2013 their batteries can be fully charged in minutes rather than hours.\u00a0 To make that happen<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2021\/09\/20210910-storedot.html\">, they are combining silicon, long considered a necessity for high energy density, and a more humble material \u2013 tin.<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16995\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/storedot-Nano-sized_particles_enable_ultra_fast_Liion_diffusion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16995\" class=\"wp-image-16995\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/storedot-Nano-sized_particles_enable_ultra_fast_Liion_diffusion-528x344.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16995\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Silicon, tin and other nanoparticles are one factor enabling Storedot&#8217;s fast-charging capabilities<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Beside the unique material blend, Storedot is working on a 4680 battery (46 millimeters in diameter, 80 in length) equivalent to what Tesla has announced for use in its cars.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2021\/01\/20\/storedot-penn-state-announce-batteries-that-recharge-in-under-10-minutes\/\">Storedot claims 10 minutes for a full charge on an automobil<\/a>e. \u00a0They demonstrated the ability to fully charge an electric scooter in five minutes last year.\u00a0 Autos could have 200 miles added to their batteries in 10 minutes by 2024, based on Storedot&#8217;s timeline.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"StoreDot\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TjGHTcrj0ik?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Storedot differentiates between range anxiety, the nervousness caused by wondering if your EV will make it to the next charging station, and charging anxiety, the worry that a charger will not be available when you arrive.\u00a0 Another anxiety in today\u2019s world is what to do while the car charges \u2013 sometimes a seven-course-meal pause \u2013 usually in areas where such repasts are not the norm \u2013 but guys named Norm are.<\/p>\n<p>Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, reflects on the problem.\u00a0 \u201cThe number one barrier to the adoption of electric vehicles is no longer cost, it is range anxiety. \u00a0You\u2019re either afraid that you\u2019re going to get stuck on the highway or you\u2019re going to need to sit in a charging station for two hours. But if the experience of the driver is exactly like fueling [a gasoline powered car], this whole anxiety goes away. A five-minute charging lithium-ion battery was considered to be impossible,\u201d he said. \u201cBut we are not releasing a lab prototype, we are releasing engineering samples from a mass production line. This demonstrates it is feasible and it\u2019s commercially ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16996\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/storedot-3d-Binder.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16996\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16996\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/storedot-3d-Binder-528x238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Holding things together, Storedot&#8217;s 3D binder restrains silicon swelling during lithiation, necessary because of speed of charging.\u00a0 The company even claims that their binder enables &#8220;self-healing&#8221; during expansion and contraction of nanoparticles<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To enhance stops at charging stations, Storedot has patented a \u201cboost\u201d program that optimizes a charging station\u2019s ability to keep up with the high-powered batteries\u2019 demands.\u00a0 \u201cLate last month, StoreDot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.store-dot.com\/post\/storedot-files-a-charging-time-patent-makes-technology-open-source-available-to-ev-ecosystem\">filed a patent<\/a> for technology that creates a \u201cbooster\u201d feature that allows the battery to analyze the capability of the charging station in real-time and adjust the battery\u2019s ability to carry high current rates. These systems are meant to significantly improve the rate of miles per minute of charging, the company said.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Finances, Battery Structure, and Chinese Competition<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>An Australian gentleman styling himself as the Electric Viking discusses the finances necessary to get Storedot\u2019s next best thing in production.\u00a0 He is dubious that this will be an affordable option for the vast majority.\u00a0 Instead, he notes this will be high-end technology not unlike the original Tesla car, with the tech finding its way into a broader, less expensive market over time.\u00a0 Storedot\u2019s choice of relatively inexpensive materials and their insistence that commonly available production lines are all that\u2019s necessary for large-scale commercialization would tend to counter that outlook.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"StoreDot\u2019s Tesla-like 4680 batteries can charge in only 10 minutes\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j1e511-VWH0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Viking discusses potential competition from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gac-motor.com\/en\/index\">GAC, a Chinese firm<\/a> with equally profound fast-charging claims and extreme mileage aspirations.\u00a0 One must remember that another Israeli firm, Phinergy, is also in the fray with new backing from Indian Oil Corporation.\u00a0 They use an aluminum-water oxidation process to generate electricity for 1,000 kilometer drives.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Awesome new EV with 900 km&#039;s range that charges from 0-80% In 8 minutes!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gEUxHYujxVc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Better and Better<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/storedot-unveils-electric-vehicle-battery-that-can-recharge-in-10-minutes\/\">According to the Times of Israel<\/a>, \u201cThe 4680 format battery will be ready for production at scale in 2024, the company said, as will its first-generation fast-charging pouch cell, also aimed at the EV market.
