{"id":14252,"date":"2021-10-08T23:19:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-09T06:19:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14252"},"modified":"2021-10-08T23:19:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-09T06:19:43","slug":"craft-aeros-16-motors-diamond-wings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/craft-aeros-16-motors-diamond-wings\/","title":{"rendered":"Craft Aero&#8217;s 16 Motors and Diamond Wings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.craft.aero\/\">Craft Aero<\/a>, yet another newcomer in the electric Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) market, brings a novel 16 motor, diamond wing design to regional aviation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/worldnewsera.com\/news\/startups\/craft-aerospaces-novel-take-on-vtol-aircraft-could-upend-local-air-travel-techcrunch\/\">Laurie Foti writing for <em>Tech Crunch<\/em><\/a>, thinks, \u201cAir taxis may still be pie in the sky,\u201d but acknowledges Craft Aerospace for aiming to move the air travel industry forward, \u201cwith a totally new vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that it believes could make city-to-city hops simpler, faster, cheaper and greener.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17083\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Craft-Aero-Lift_Cruise-08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17083\" class=\"wp-image-17083\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Craft-Aero-Lift_Cruise-08-528x632.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"718\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Craft Aerospace&#8217;s downward deflecting wing flaps and distributed electric propulsion will enable eVTOL flight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She credits Craft for its \u201cnew\u201d method of deflecting airflow downward to gain vertical takeoffs, something qualified by company co-founder James Dorris.\u00a0 He notes that, \u201cOur tech is a combination of both existing and novel tech. \u00a0The box wing has been built and flown; the high flap aircraft has been built and flown. They\u2019ve never been synthesized like this in a VTOL aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Craft Aerospace Intro\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nV5khgI48MA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Claiming to cut regional flight times in half, Dorris explains the time savings possible.\u00a0 \u201cAnyone that\u2019s ever had to take a flight that lasts under an hour knows that three times longer is spent in security lines, gate walks and, of course, getting to and from these necessarily distant major airports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8217;We\u2019re not talking about flying wealthy people to the mall \u2014 there are major inefficiencies in major corridors.\u00a0 The key to shortening that delay is picking people up in cities and dropping them off in cities. So for these short hops, we need to combine the advantages of fixed-wing aircraft and VTOL.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17085\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Craft-Aero-skip-the-airport.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17085\" class=\"wp-image-17085\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Craft-Aero-skip-the-airport-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Small space required for multiple Craft airplanes would allow one to &#8220;Skip the Airport,&#8221; according to the firm<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The overall design and intent of the high-lift machine seems to call out for more than just urban hops, though.\u00a0 Craft\u2019s web site explains, \u201cNot <em>another flying car.\u00a0 Our range covers 65% of domestic air routes<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 But Craft does not chart out trips between major airports.\u00a0 Their routes cover things like Santa Monica to Fisherman\u2019s Wharf in San Francisco.\u00a0 The 381 air miles between the two cities are a 45-minute trip by jet, but undoable because Santa Monica airport\u2019s 3,500-foot runway would not be usable by regular airliners. \u00a0Even a small airliner such as an Embraer 170 requires far more runway for landings and takeoffs.<\/p>\n<p>But flying from a parking garage or the pier in Santa Monica would eliminate the 26-mile drive from there to the Burbank airport \u2013 a time-eating struggle on a good day.\u00a0 Being able to lift off by the beach and fly directly to Fisherman\u2019s Wharf eliminates airport drives or expensive cab rides.<\/p>\n<p>These are very much the economics of any prospective eVTOL operation, and don\u2019t count the saving graces of not going through the stress of TSA inspections and mile-long hikes to a boarding gate.\u00a0 With only nine passengers, boarding is quick.\u00a0 The flight may be slower than the bigger jets, but avoids the many hassles with which conventional flights are fraught.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17086\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/craft-SFLanding.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17086\" class=\"wp-image-17086\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/craft-SFLanding-528x395.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"449\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17086\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landing on Fisherman&#8217;s Wharf gets on San Francisco hours ahead of the cab ride from SFO<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Craft has flown its design in large-scale model form, and is still engineering the number of motors (16 shown on renderings so far).\u00a0 This is not uncommon.\u00a0 Early images of NASA\u2019s X-57 Maxwell showed regular changes in numbers and placement of that airplane\u2019s motors.\u00a0 Craft will incorporate a hybrid system with a fuel-powered generator, enabling flights up to 1,000 miles at 35,000 feet and 345 mph.\u00a0 The thrust-directing flaps and need for pressurization will be design challenges for the team.<\/p>\n<p>A recent entry in the market, Craft has personnel from Virgin Hyperloop, car company Karma, Space X, MIT, and has backing from the U. S. Air Force.\u00a0 Cofounder James Dorris came from the Nevada Hyperloop project and cofounder Axel Radermacher worked Karma Automotive\u2019s powertrain \u2013 as well as other electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The team has a good many accomplished engineers and an apparent wealth of bright ideas.\u00a0 How soon these come to fruition and actual flight testing remains to be seen, but large-scale hops with full flap operation could begin in a few months.\u00a0 An interesting design, Craft&#8217;s machine would make for an interesting flight experience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fcraft-aeros-16-motors-diamond-wings%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Craft Aero, yet another newcomer in the electric Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) market, brings a novel 16 motor, diamond wing design to regional aviation.
