{"id":14255,"date":"2021-10-12T12:30:48","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T19:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14255"},"modified":"2021-10-12T12:30:48","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T19:30:48","slug":"following-sky-taxi-money-evtols","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/following-sky-taxi-money-evtols\/","title":{"rendered":"Following the Sky Taxi Money: eVTOLs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As though by magic, money from Wall Street, venture capitalists and other investors show a growing interest and cash flow in sky taxis.\u00a0 It started on August 11 with JoeBen Bevirt of JOBY ringing the bell that starts trading on the stock market floor.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Joby Rings the Opening Bell at the NYSE\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vD1XYj6g3Fs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/grow.acorns.com\/ringing-the-bell-at-the-new-york-stock-exchange\/#:~:text=The%20New%20York%20Stock%20Exchange%2C%20founded%20in%201792%2C%20has%20become,exchange%20can%20ring%20the%20bell\">As one web site points out,<\/a> it\u2019s up to the discretion of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as to who gets to ring the bell and, \u201cOnly those companies with stocks or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed on the exchange can ring the bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll look at a sampling of companies making electric Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles and selling in domestic and foreign markets for an overview of what\u2019s hot.\u00a0 Later, we\u2019ll look at the inroads being made by makers of fixed-wing aerial vehicles in the nascent regional market.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archer.com\/\"><strong>Archer<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe closing of the business combination (with Atlas Crest Investment Corp.) generated $857.6 million of gross proceeds, <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.archer.com\/news\/news-details\/2021\/Archer-Rings-Opening-Bell-to-Celebrate-the-Closing-of-its-Business-Combination-and-Listing-on-the-NYSE\/default.aspx\">which will help fund Archer&#8217;s vision of bringing an electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle (eVTOL) to market<\/a> and launching an urban air mobility (UAM) network.\u201d\u00a0 Archer\u2019s Co-Founders and Co-CEOs, Brett Adcock and Adam Goldstein did the honors, with workers in corporate garb cheering the event and snapping selfies.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Archer x NYSE: Listing Day Recap\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ey15HRUQDN0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Beta Aviation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As of May 18, <a href=\"https:\/\/evtol.com\/news\/beta-technologies-ups-deal-150-evtol-aircraft\/\">Beta Technologies received $386 million in funds<\/a> from a group headed by Fidelity Management &amp; Research Company and joined by <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3167057-1&amp;h=3241863491&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aboutamazon.com%2Fnews%2Fsustainability%2Famazon-invests-in-beta-technologies-to-accelerate-zero-emission-air-transportation&amp;a=Amazon%27s+Climate+Pledge+Fund\">Amazon&#8217;s Climate Pledge Fund<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0 United Parcel Service (UPS) has expressed an interest in purchasing 150 Alias and Blade Urban Air Mobility wants 10 for passenger service.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/pipeline.unither.com\/\">United Therapeutics<\/a> has backed Beta for years and will use their craft for rapid organ deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GWSLdX2SsGk<\/p>\n<h4><strong>eHang<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehang.com\/ehangaav\/\">eHang trades on NASDAQ under the symbol EH<\/a>.\u00a0 Reaching a <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/EH\/chart?\">high $129 a share in February and dropping to $21 in recent months<\/a>, one can understand the challenges faced by investors in a new market.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The CEO of EHang Shares His Vision of the Company at the VivaTech Conference\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YsUTGjX3YDk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Embraer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Embraer X has signed a letter of intention with Aviation Management Services \u2013 Servi\u00e7os Aeron\u00e1uticos Ltda. (\u201cAvantto\u201d) announcing, \u201cA partnership aimed at developing the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem in Latin America. This includes an order for 100 of Eve\u2019s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, as well as a collaboration to develop a new eVTOL operation in Brazil and across Latin America. Deliveries are expected to start in 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eve has an additional order for 100 aircraft from Bristow Group Inc. (NYSE: VTOL).\u00a0 In an interesting approach, Helipass has announced a partnership with Embraer X, \u201cTo fly Eve\u2019s electric aircraft for a total of 50,000 flight hours per year. This could lead to an optional increase of 100,000 annual flight hours across Helipass\u2019 network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embraer&#039;s Eve Air Mobility To Provide eVTOL Jets To Blade Air Mobility &amp; Helisul Aviation | EmbraerX\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cdeEKeqZZb0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hyundai<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Hyundai Motor is pulling four major companies together to Accelerate Urban Air Mobility. \u00a0Test flights will take place in Partnership with Incheon International Airport Corp., Hyundai Engineering &amp; Construction, and KT Corp.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CES 2020 Hyundai HUB Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n5p6wTrB1II?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hyundai is concentrating not just on their aerial vehicle, but on the stationary and mobile infrastructure to support them.\u00a0 Hyundai seems to have an all-inclusive view of a utopian future.\u00a0 This is being down to \u201calign with the <a href=\"https:\/\/smartcity.go.kr\/en\/2020\/06\/04\/%EA%B5%AD%ED%86%A0%EB%B6%80-%E3%80%8C%ED%95%9C%EA%B5%AD%ED%98%95-%EB%8F%84%EC%8B%AC%ED%95%AD%EA%B3%B5%EA%B5%90%ED%86%B5k-uam-%EB%A1%9C%EB%93%9C%EB%A7%B5%E3%80%8D-%EB%B0%9C%ED%91%9C\/\">Korean UAM Roadmap,<\/a>\u201d a set of increasing range and automation objectives for urban air travel.\u00a0 One goal, traveling one kilometer (0.62 miles) would cost only 1,300 wan ($1.09), not bad for short-distance air travel.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Joby<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Joby is valued at well over $8 billion at this time, and has partnered with the U. S. Air Force\u2019s Agility Prime program to further develop urban air mobility.\u00a0 Joby, NASA, and Agility Prime are testing various aspects of eVTOL operation and capabilities.\u00a0 Interestingly, there are no public announcements of sales of Joby eVTOLs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Morgan Stanley&#039;s bullish call on Joby Aviation: Niche, green flying machine\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lmDxLahdiGk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lilium<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lilium announced that it has completed its <a href=\"https:\/\/lilium.com\/newsroom-detail\/lilium-closes-business-combination-with-qell-begin-trading-on-nasdaq-under-lilm\">business combination with Qell Acquisition Corp<\/a>. (\u201cQell\u201d), a publicly listed special purpose acquisition company (Nasdaq: QELL).\u00a0 This Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) will provide \u00a0Lilium with\u00a0 approximately $584 million of gross proceeds, &#8220;prior to transaction expenses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Wiegand, Co-Founder and CEO of Lilium said, \u201cIn 2015 with the clear vision that the decarbonization of aviation is inevitable, we set out to build a team and product that would radically transform the way the world moves. Six years and five generations of technology demonstrator aircraft later, we&#8217;re closer than ever to this goal. Today&#8217;s milestone will bring us even closer to launching our service in 2024 and making sustainable, high-speed regional air travel a reality to communities around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Final approach with our 5th generation technology demonstrator\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8FK79N3TWEQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/aircraft\/lilium-azul-sale\/\">New Atlas reports<\/a>, \u201cLilium has become the latest eVTOL manufacturer to announce a significant provisional aircraft sale \u2013 this time, a 220-unit, billion-dollar deal with Azul in Brazil, which values the electric seven-seat Lilium Jets at around US$4 million apiece.\u201d\u00a0 Azul , Brazil\u2019s third largest airline, serves smaller airports and many otherwise underserved areas, fitting Lilium\u2019s business model quite well.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Vertical Aerospace<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Vertical, a British enterprise, is developing the VA-X-4, \u201cA zero-carbon aircraft that can carry four passengers and a pilot, and fly at speeds up to 200 mph over a range of over 100 miles.\u201d\u00a0 They seem to be pulling in a great many orders, with American Airlines pre-ordering up to 250 aircraft and <a href=\"https:\/\/evtol.com\/news\/marubeni-japan-orders-200-evtol-aircraft-vertical-aerospace\/\">Marubeni, an investment and trading company<\/a> in Japan ordering another 200.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/american-airlines-invests-future-urban-145617843.html\">According to Yahoo News<\/a>, \u201cAmerican plans to make a $25 million investment in Vertical through a private investment in public equity (PIPE) transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Total orders may be as high as 1,350 with a potential value of approximately $5.4 billion.\u00a0 This is a surprising amount of money coming from unique sources into sky taxis.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Meet our industry leading partner ecosystem\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_vf8tsPyeUI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Volocopter<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/luftrettung.adac.de\/\">ADAC Luftrettung<\/a>. A German aeromedical company, has reserved two of Volocopter\u2019s VoloCity aircraft to prepare for operational testing of multicopters in future medical response services.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/air-taxi-startup-volocopter-sell-150-aircraft-china-jv-2021-09-22\/\">In a joint venture with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group,<\/a> Volocopter managed an even larger sale of 150 aircraft.\u00a0 With further partnerships with Daimler, Black Rock and Intel Capital, Volocopter expects to bring eVTOL aircraft to China in \u201cthe next three to five years.\u201d\u00a0 Florian Reuter, Volocopter\u2019s CEO sees China as the biggest single market opportunity for the urban air mobility industry.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bXPB5VH2KiQ<\/p>\n<p>Not resting on its laurels, Volocopter is introducing a new, more aerodynamic commuter craft to market.\u00a0 This looks to be a faster, longer-range version of what has already been accomplished.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Disrupting in Style<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Disruptive technologies are said to go through a quiescent state, during which critics often deride the idea of their existence, then suddenly bloom.\u00a0 Money talks, though, and big money seems to be lifting eVTOLs and sky taxis into an ever more-promising future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Ffollowing-sky-taxi-money-evtols%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As though by magic, money from Wall Street, venture capitalists and other investors show a growing interest and cash flow in sky taxis.\u00a0 It started on August 11 with JoeBen Bevirt of JOBY ringing the bell that starts trading on the stock market floor.
