{"id":14295,"date":"2021-11-15T16:53:06","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T23:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14295"},"modified":"2021-11-15T16:53:06","modified_gmt":"2021-11-15T23:53:06","slug":"electron-electric-kit-lsa-with-promise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/electron-electric-kit-lsa-with-promise\/","title":{"rendered":"Electron: an Electric Kit LSA with Promise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since we recently promoted a survey on interest in a kit-built Light Sport Aircraft that would be powered electrically, it\u2019s interesting to see such a craft nearing first flight in Australia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17163\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/electron-white-shell.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17163\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17163\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/electron-white-shell-528x297.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Electron E-75&#8217;s white shell shows precision of moldings<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Electron looks a great deal like Zara Rutherford\u2019s record attempt Shark, a Slovakian European ultralight.\u00a0 Even with fixed gear rather than the retractables on Zara\u2019s Shark, the Electron still promises a cruise speed of 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph).<\/p>\n<p>75 kilowatts (100.5 horsepower) can urge the plane to that speed, considerably faster than a Cessna 150 on the same power.\u00a0 Weighing less than 600 kilograms (1,320 pounds), Electron is 280 pounds lighter than a 150 at full gross weight. \u00a0Its eight-meter (26.24 feet) wingspan and 9.29 square meters (99.99 square feet) of wing area gives a slightly higher span loading than a 150, and a significantly greater wing loading.\u00a0 Still, Electron promises much greater speed.\u00a0 We will await rate of climb figures.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17166\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/electron-rudder-pedal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17166\" class=\"wp-image-17166\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/electron-rudder-pedal-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rudder pedal shows clever engineering, light weighting of components<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Carbon fiber, \u201ctargeted use of aramid (Kevlar?), and CNC aluminum components contribute to a light, strong structure.\u00a0 Beautifully made molds produce sailplane-like, wave-free surfaces, which enhance the laminar flow design.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Electron E-75 Two Place All Electric Aircraft\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PO_-K17oJ-o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 75-kilowatt motor is listed as an MGM-Compro REB-90 according to the Australian magazine, <em>Sport Flying<\/em>.\u00a0 Weighing 22 kilograms (48.5 pounds), the motor is a small part of the aircraft\u2019s total weight.\u00a0 Of course, this is short of the added weight of an electronic speed controller (ESC) and the 46 kilowatt-hour battery.\u00a0 Based on a \u201cguesstimate\u201d of 200 Watt-hours per kilogram, such a pack would weigh about 230 kilos (506 pounds).\u00a0 The battery pack can provide a claimed range of 350 kilometers (217 statute miles).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/electron-dimensions.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17165\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/electron-dimensions-528x324.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"368\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the MGM-Compro web site, the motor is priced at 7,875 euros (9,065 U. S. dollars). \u00a0Operating costs, according to Electron Aero, would be around $16 to $18 per hour.\u00a0 These are Australian dollars, equivalent to $11.68 to $13.14 U. S.\u00a0 At current market prices, lithium-ion batteries cost about $137 U. S. per kilowatt-hour.\u00a0 The pack would cost $6,302 at those prices.\u00a0 Adding costs for a battery management system and associated cables could mean a total powerplant price under $20,000.\u00a0 This puts the package and operating costs at or below those for a conventional system.\u00a0 With battery prices trending lower, and aviation gasoline prices trending higher, we could see price parity soon.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17169\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/electron-spinner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17169\" class=\"wp-image-17169\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/electron-spinner-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Compro motor fits neatly behind propeller spinner<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Developers, though, indicate pricing may be in the $150,000 to $200,000 (AUD) range ($110,205 to $147,000 USD).\u00a0 That&#8217;s in the upper end of LSA pricing, but with a performance bonus.<\/p>\n<p>If Electron Aero can bring a kit to market at a reasonable price, with a well-integrated power system and modern, electric instrumentation, they will have a competitive, modern craft that would look good on any flight line.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Felectron-electric-kit-lsa-with-promise%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since we recently promoted a survey on interest in a kit-built Light Sport Aircraft that would be powered electrically, it\u2019s interesting to see such a craft nearing first flight in Australia.
