{"id":1681,"date":"2010-08-28T23:06:02","date_gmt":"2010-08-29T06:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=1681"},"modified":"2010-08-28T23:06:04","modified_gmt":"2010-08-29T06:06:04","slug":"buckeyes-bullet-to-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/buckeyes-bullet-to-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Buckeyes Bullet to Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Engineering and design students with Ohio State University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/car.osu.edu\/\">Center for Automotive Research <\/a>heated the Bonneville Salt Flats August 23, 2010 with a speed record for electric vehicles on the famed white wasteland \u2013 307.66 miles per hour for the average of two one-mile runs.\u00a0 The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buckeyebullet.com\/\">Buckeye Bullet BBV2.5 <\/a>flew through the flying mile at 320 mph under the experienced hand of Roger Schroer, a professional race driver who has worked with the University team for the last six years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.osu.edu\/news\/?p=1473\">Buckeyes await certification <\/a>of their record by the Federation Internationale de l\u2019Automobile, the worldwide motor sports governing body.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1683\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1683\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=1683\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1683\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1683\" title=\"Back Camera\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/BB2_5firstrun082010-528x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/BB2_5firstrun082010-528x394.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/BB2_5firstrun082010-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BB2.5 prepares for first run<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The team comprises graduate and undergraduate students in multiple engineering disciplines.\u00a0 Center Director Giorgio Rizzoni acts as team advisor, undergraduate David Cooke is team leader, graduate mechanical engineer Gary Bork heads up the grads, Rob Ewing is mechanical leader, and graduate electrical engineer R. J. Kromer is the electrical leader.<\/p>\n<p>Graphic design major Kelly Hartnett keeps the world updated on team activities through her <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.buckeyebullet.com\/\">blog<\/a>, explaining, \u201cOur last attempt yesterday was all set to be the best run yet, everything was looking great, but midway through the first mile, we busted our clutch.\u00a0 Too much torque from our motor ripped apart the half inch steel teeth that keep the motor connected to the gearbox.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a late night of trying to disassemble the motor and reinstall another type of clutch, we decided to call it: our last record will stay the best for the VBB2.5.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Venturi Buckeye Bullet 2.5 at Bonneville Salt Flats\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iDaOffc7nkA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ohio State has an impressive resume, with last year\u2019s achievement of highest speed achieved by a fuel cell-powered automobile, 302.877 mph, and a 2004 uncertified battery powered speed of 314.9 mph in Buckeye Bullet 1.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/buckeyebullet2\"><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0The Center for Automotive Research notes, \u201cThe Bullet 2.5 uses the same body and chassis of the hydrogen fuel cell powered Buckeye Bullet 2, and nearly the same electric traction system, but it is powered by a 600+ kW <a href=\"http:\/\/www.a123systems.com\">A123 Systems <\/a>lithium-ion battery pack that was designed, tested and assembled by the Bullet team and A123 Systems. The team is supported by French electric vehicle manufacturer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.venturi.fr\/\">Venturi Automobiles<\/a>, which lends its 10-year expertise in electric vehicles and significant sponsorship funding to the students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They are backed, too, by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trcpg.com\/\">Transportation Research Center, Inc.<\/a>, a design, \u00a0research and testing facility.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=874\">Eva Hakansson<\/a>, speaker at the fourth annual Electric Aircraft Symposium, is planning an assault on this record with a two-wheeler capable of 400 mph.\u00a0 Her discussion on building 500 hp battery packs for Killacycle, her husband Bill Dube&#8217;s record-holding drag bike, was educational and sobering for the extreme care that must be exercised in dealing with battery packs of this power.\u00a0 We wish the Buckeyes and Eva ongoing good luck in their endeavors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fbuckeyes-bullet-to-record%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
