id=\"caption-attachment-1945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ENFICA-FC rolling out for first flight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Skyleader 150 Zero CO2 light sport aircraft, built by JIHLAVAN airplanes, Ltd. in the Czech Republic, was fitted with Intelligent Energy proton exchange membrane (PEM)\u00a0fuel cells from the United Kingdom, an inverter and\u00a0power management system by Italy&#8217;s Mavel Elletronica, and a motor at least partially designed by the University of Pisa, Italy.\u00a0 Tanks and a high-pressure fuel delivery system were created by the UK&#8217;s Air Products Limited.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1946\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1946\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=1946\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1946\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1946\" title=\"enfica fuel href=\"http:\/\/www.enfica-fc.polito.it\/Documents\/video\/click_here_to_play_rapid200fc_first_flight_first_hydrogen_fuel_cell_aircraft_flight\">ENFICA-FC <\/a>(Environmentally Friendly Inter City Aircraft Powered by Fuel Cells) the airplane was actually the fourth\u00a0machine to fly on hydrogen power, the first being a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boeing.com\/news\/releases\/2008\/q2\/080403a_nr.html\">Boeing conversion <\/a>of a Diamond Dimona motorglider that cruised at 120 kilometers per hour (74.4 miles per hour) for 20 minutes in early 2008 after taking off on battery power, the second a DLR\u00a0 (Deutsches Zentrum f\u00fcr Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V., or the German Space Agency) modified <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dlr.de\/en\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-344\/1345_read-24966\/\">Lange Antares <\/a>that was first to self-launch on hydrogen, and the third Gerard Thevenot&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=167\">fuel cell-powered ultralight<\/a> with which he crossed the English Channel in 2009.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1947\" style=\"width: 356px\" tw0-minute maiden flight on May 20, 2010, followed by an 11-minute foray into flight envelope investigation.\u00a0 On May 26, the plane made a speed dash of four consecutive runs over a three-kilometer course (FAI Sporting Code &#8211; Class C), averaging 135 kilometers per hour (83.7 miles per hour).\u00a0 Unofficially, test pilot Marco Locatelli pushed the plane for several sprints at 145-150 km\/hr (89.9-93 mph).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The airplane has a 40 kilowatt motor, supplied by two 20 kW fuel cells and backed up, for safety&#8217;s sake, by 20 kW lithium polymer batteries that provide redundant power in case of problems with the fuel cells.\u00a0 The liquid-cooled (eight liters of\u00a0bi-distilled water tucked into the right wing)\u00a0fuel cells provide 100-110 Amps at\u00a0200-240 Volts and are supplied with hydrogen at 350 bar (over 5,000 pounds per square inch).\u00a0 Despite the high pressure, the fuel cells never exceeded 70 degrees C (158 degrees F) during the record flight.<\/p>\n<p>Project personnel are looking forward to applying the lessons learned from ENFICA-FC to a possible commuter liner being developed with an\u00a0Israeli aerospace company, leading the way toward a zero CO future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe
