{"id":2067,"date":"2010-11-08T06:31:13","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T13:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=2067"},"modified":"2010-11-08T06:31:13","modified_gmt":"2010-11-08T13:31:13","slug":"163-horsepower-from-25-pounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/163-horsepower-from-25-pounds\/","title":{"rendered":"163 Horsepower from 25 Pounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingap.com\/index.htm\">ThinGap, LLC <\/a>is well known for small motors with excellent performance characteristics, eliminating the use of iron and its resultant \u201clossiness\u201d and depending instead on copper foil, rather than wire windings for its internally clean structure.<\/p>\n<p>The design leads to a lack of \u201ccogging,\u201d that notched feeling found when turning over some motors by hand.\u00a0 Each individual magnet causes the rotor to stop, or \u201ccog,\u201d sometimes making low-speed operation a bit hesitant and smooth transitions difficult.\u00a0 That, the unique ring design and an aluminum housing help carry heat away and allow for an internal controller.<\/p>\n<p>ThinGap have focused on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingap.com\/pdf\/lewaerospace.pdf\">smaller unmanned aerial vehicle applications <\/a>for many years, but have moved into larger automotive and aircraft products, with one model in particular capturing our attention.\u00a0 The non-production 14090 ring motor is 14 inches in diameter, weighs 25.6 pounds and can deliver 122 kilowatts (163 horsepower) \u2013 about 6.4 horsepower per pound and close to the <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=204\">Halbach array motors <\/a>of Geoff Long and comparable with the <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=1093\">ISIS motors <\/a>developed at Oxford University.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2069\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2069\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=2069\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2069\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2069\" title=\"thingap-dc-ring-motor\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/thingap-dc-ring-motor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/thingap-dc-ring-motor.jpg 500w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/thingap-dc-ring-motor-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ThinGap&#39;s 14-inch ring motor, only 3.5 inches thick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201c\u2019ThinGap\u2019s 14-inch electric ring motor allows a ducted fan to develop as much thrust as with a gas engine, which is a game-changing milestone,\u2019 said Rean Pretorius, President, ThinGap, LLC. \u2018At 6.4 HP per pound, its power to weight ratio has not been achieved by any electric motor currently in production and exceeds the aerospace engineering threshold of 5 HP per pound.
