As the cells&#8217; efficiency grows with development, they will provide greater flexibility of operation.\u00a0 Their resistance to failure, demonstrated in the video, will enhance the reliability of the overall airplane.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Damage Tolerance Demo desktop\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w0EbyhACby0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>George Bye has noted an economy of operation that might relight some aviation enthusiasts\u2019 desire to go flying.\u00a0 Standard 172s cost about $35 to $50 per hour in direct operating costs, with those costs climbing as oil becomes more scarce.\u00a0 Bye\u2019s Cessna will cost about $8 to $10 per hour, and seriously reduce the cost of scheduled maintenance such as oil and spark plug changes, magneto rebuilds, and occasional repairs caused by the vibration of even the smoothest reciprocating engine.<\/p>\n<p>If Bye can market the electric 172 conversion at a price near the replacement cost for a six-cylinder Continental or four-cylinder Lycoming, many Cessna\u2019s will see new life in a green-flight realm.<\/p>\n<p>One site lists the retail price of an O-320-B1A purchased outright at $47,076, and other sites, including that for Van\u2019s Aircraft, show used mid-time engines at $15,000-$25,000.\u00a0 A $50,000 basic electric conversion (one goal mentioned)\u00a0would provide $44,000 to $80,000 in operating cost\u00a0savings over the 2,000 TBO life of the Lycoming, but would require an as-yet undetermined cost for battery replacement after 1,000 or more cycles.\u00a0 Theoretically, battery prices will go down as avgas costs go up, making the electric airplane an economic alternative.\u00a0 With many of the 43,000 172&#8217;s manufactured since 1955 nearing the end of at least their (current)\u00a0engine&#8217;s service life, the opportunities for relatively inexpensive electric flight seem ever brighter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fnot-your-fathers-172%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>George Bye, CEO of Bye Energy and head of the Green Flight Project, hopes to test fly the electric Cessna 172 in the spring of 2011.\u00a0 Recent illustrations show the \u201cfull-dress\u201d electric craft with Ascent solar cells, a high-tech propeller, streamlined cowling, and vortex collectors at the wing tips\u2019 trailing edges.\u00a0 Each element is intended [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[15,14],"tags":[257,253,255,868,181,870,869,871],"class_list":["post-2225","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-electric_powerplants","category-sustainable_ga","tag-ascent-solar","tag-george-bye","tag-green-flight-project","tag-lycoming-o-320","tag-solar-cells","tag-tbo","tag-vans-aircraft","tag-vortex-collectors"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
