{"id":2386,"date":"2011-01-01T01:31:41","date_gmt":"2011-01-01T08:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=2386"},"modified":"2011-08-03T20:58:09","modified_gmt":"2011-08-04T03:58:09","slug":"sunseeker-iii-becomes-the-duo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/sunseeker-iii-becomes-the-duo\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunseeker III Becomes the Duo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dropping a digit and its Latinate numeration, the recently renamed Sunseeker, a joint collaboration between Eric Raymond and a group of German, Swiss, Polish and Slovenian contributors, is showing progress towards its 2011 test flights.<\/p>\n<p>The 23-meter (75.46 feet) span solar-powered sailplane takes its wing from the Stuttgart Akaflieg Icare II, its fuselage from the Stemme basic profiles, is being built at least partially in Poland, and uses an electric motor designed by Slovenian native Roman Susnik, as noted in <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=1190\">an earlier entry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2388\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2388\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=2388\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2388\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2388\" title=\"Sunseeker Duo\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Sunseeker-Duo-528x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Sunseeker-Duo-528x240.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Sunseeker-Duo-300x136.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunseeker Duo with basic specifications<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The craft&#8217;s specifications provide evidence of the care employed in the design and construction of this lightweight marvel.\u00a0 A 75-foot wing aircraft weighing 270 kilograms (594 pounds)\u00a0empty and 470 kilograms (\u00a01,034 pounds) when carrying two in its side-by-side cockpit is an achievement.\u00a0 Compare that to the 345 kg (765 pounds)\u00a0empty weight and 550 kg (1,220 pounds) maximum weight of a &#8220;light&#8221; Piper Cub, with only a 36-foot, strut-braced wing.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a013.8 pounds-per-foot\u00a0span loading (compare to the Cub&#8217;s\u00a033.9 pounds-per foot)\u00a0of the Duo will\u00a0allow reasonable climb performance on its 20 kilowatt (26.8 horsepower) motor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2389\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2389\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=2389\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2389\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2389 \" title=\"sunseeker duo test-section-in-mold\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/sunseeker-duo-test-section-in-mold-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/sunseeker-duo-test-section-in-mold-528x352.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/sunseeker-duo-test-section-in-mold-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/sunseeker-duo-test-section-in-mold.jpg 1092w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunseeker Duo test section in Stuttgart mold.
