{"id":2598,"date":"2011-01-27T09:02:30","date_gmt":"2011-01-27T16:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=2598"},"modified":"2011-04-26T19:39:03","modified_gmt":"2011-04-27T02:39:03","slug":"1-50-a-gallon-carbon-free-and-maybe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/1-50-a-gallon-carbon-free-and-maybe\/","title":{"rendered":"$1.50 a Gallon, Carbon-Free, and Maybe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/breakthrough-promises-150-per-gallon-synthetic-gasoline-with-no-carbon-emissions\/17687\/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&amp;utm_campaign=1772ea5469-UA-2235360-4&amp;utm_medium=email\"><em>Gizmag<\/em> <\/a>readers responded pretty much equally with hope and skepticism to today\u2019s story on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cellaenergy.com\/\">Cella Energy\u2019s <\/a>announcement of their hydrogen-based, emissions-free fuel that would power your car for $1.50 a gallon.\u00a0 One asked if it were April 1 yet.\u00a0 Others held out more charitable views of the announcement, and perhaps deservedly so.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2599\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=2599\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2599\" title=\"Cella tank comparison\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Cella-tank-comparison.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Cella-tank-comparison.png 434w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Cella-tank-comparison-300x177.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/breakthrough-promises-150-per-gallon-synthetic-gasoline-with-no-carbon-emissions\/17687\/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&amp;utm_campaign=1772ea5469-UA-2235360-4&amp;utm_medium=email\"><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Cella&#8217;s diagram compares bulky high-pressure storage with room-temperature, ambient-pressure storage solution<\/dd>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cella is partially a spinoff of Oxford University\u2019s ISIS programs, named for the Egyptian goddess of magic and life and overflowing with demonstrated successes.\u00a0 We\u2019ve reported on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordyasamotors.com\/\">Yokeless And Segmented Armature (YASA\u2122) topology\u00a0motor<\/a>, a 34-centimeter (13.4 inches) diameter, 7-centimeter (2.76 inches) thick, 11 kilogram (23.2 pound) marvel that can produce a peak 100 kilowatts and 700 Nm (516 foot-pounds) of peak torque.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cella\u2019s web site claims several important factors that would lead to success, including:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Hydrogen fuels for vehicle you can pump like regular gasoline at room temperature and pressure, safer to use than gasoline or diesel but with zero carbon emissions.\u201d\u00a0 Cella may also produce, \u201cFuel additives that could allow a regular vehicle to meet the Euro 6 emission standards with minimal modifications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Aircraft that can fly with less emissions with jet-fuel, JP8 or kerosene fuel additives, but with minor modifications to jet-engine design,\u201d with \u201csignificant reduction in harmful emissions in the upper atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At an overview level, \u201cCella Energy Ltd makes safe, low-cost hydrogen storage materials. Our materials use nano-structuring to safely encapsulate hydrogen at ambient temperatures and pressures. This sidesteps the requirement for an expensive hydrogen infrastructure.\u201d\u00a0 Their technology could be used to power laptops, store energy from wind power systems, and provide safer hydrogen storage for space travel.<\/p>\n<p>Working since 2007, Professor Stephen Bennington and Dr. Arthur Lovell at the 1,200 person STFC ISIS facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and at the London Centre for Microtechnology at University College London UCL developed a white tissue-paper-like storage medium and a similar white powder that can hold hydrogen in a safe state. With work at UCL led by Professor Neal Skipper, Professor Bill David from STFC and Dr. Martin Owen Jones from Oxford University, \u201cprovided valuable insights into advanced complex hydride materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cella\u2019s claims for their hydrogen storage media include one important consideration.\u00a0 Where does one get the hydrogen?\u00a0 Many methods for generating hydrogen require expensive catalysts and labor-intensive processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCella Energy have developed a method using a low-cost process called coaxial electrospinning or electrospraying that can trap a complex chemical hydride inside a nano-porous polymer that speeds up the kinetics of hydrogen desorption, reduces the temperature at which the desorption occurs and filters out many if not all of the damaging chemicals. It also protects the hydrides from oxygen and water, making it possible to handle\u00a0them in air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coaxial electrospinning process that Cella uses is simple and industrially scalable, it can be used to create micron scale micro-fibres or micro-beads nano-porous polymers filled with the chemical hydride. Cella believes that this technology can produce an inexpensive, compound material that can be handled safely in air, operates at low pressures and temperatures and has sufficiently high hydrogen concentration and rapid desorption kinetics to be useful for transport applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur current composite material uses ammonia borane NH3BH3 as the hydride and polystyrene as the polymer nano-scaffold. Ammonia borane in its normal state releases 12wt% of hydrogen at temperatures between 110\u00b0C and 150\u00b0C, but with very slow kinetics. In our materials the accessible hydrogen content is reduced to 6wt% but the temperature of operation is reduced so that it starts releasing hydrogen below 80\u00b0C and the kinetics are an order of magnitude faster.
