{"id":2790,"date":"2011-03-02T19:41:38","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T02:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=2790"},"modified":"2011-04-21T16:09:05","modified_gmt":"2011-04-21T23:09:05","slug":"front-electric-self-launcher-on-a-silent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/front-electric-self-launcher-on-a-silent\/","title":{"rendered":"Front Electric Self-Launcher on a Silent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Slovenian father-son team Luka and Matija Znidarsic developed a <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=194\">unique approach\u00a0<\/a>to keep a sailplane aloft once it&#8217;s\u00a0launched through traditional aero-tow or winch methods.\u00a0 Their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.front-electric-sustainer.com\/index.php\">outrunner\u00a0 brushless motor <\/a>produces 15 kilowatts (20 horsepower)at 100 Volts continuously, and can generate 25 kW (33 horsepower)\u00a0for short bursts.\u00a0 Weighing\u00a0 6.5 kilograms (14.3 pounds)\u00a0in a 180 millimeter\u00a0(7 inches)\u00a0diameter, 80 mm (3.15 inches)\u00a0long package, the motor can be easily set into the modified nose of a conventional sailplane, with a one-meter diameter propeller folding neatly into the streamlines of the fuselage.\u00a0 It has powered a LAK-17A\u00a018-meter sailplane, showing a positive rate of climb when energized.\u00a0 In a big sailplane like the LAK, the motor allows shortening expensive tows or extending flight when thermals become iffy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Silent FE-SL selflaunch\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/20414751?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Now, the Znidarsics have increased the capability to allow self launching with a sailplane, at least for smaller craft such as the Silent.\u00a0 According to Luka, &#8220;We developed\u00a0 a 3cm (a little over an inch) longer motor than is used on LAK. \u00a0So it is more powerful,&#8221;\u00a0to allow\u00a0&#8220;climbing on max power for [a]\u00a0longer time.\u00a0\u00a0 The battery pack is slightly bigger too.&#8221;\u00a0 The propeller is similar to that used on the LAK, but the\u00a0curvature of the blade will be modified to make it more suitable to fuselage of the Silent.\u00a0 It was installed in the &#8220;pure glider&#8221; version of the aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Luka says more testing will give exact data, but he believes that the package will provide up to 1,600 meters (5,120 feet)\u00a0of altitude gain or approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) of horizontal flight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_2796\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2796\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=2796\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2796\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2796 \" title=\"FCUv2 FES Controller\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/FCUv2-FES-Controller-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/FCUv2-FES-Controller-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/FCUv2-FES-Controller-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/FCUv2-FES-Controller.jpg 649w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The neatly integrated instrumentation from FES<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In a related development FES now\u00a0\u00a0has an FCU that fills a standard 57 mm instrument panel opening.\u00a0 According to FES,\u00a0it is designed for simple operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;It indicates important parameters like, RPM, Power, Voltage, Current, Battery capacity, Remaining time and Temperatures. In case that one of the parameters is out of limit, an alarm is activated together with a sound signal.\u00a0 [The]\u00a0FCU also counts total engine running time, and some other parameters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;There is only one toggle switch to turn on instrument and a button with rotary encoder which acts as throttle selector and propeller brake.
