He has 25-years of experience in the performance analysis and computer modeling of aerospace vehicles and subsystems at Northrop Grumman. Phil has authored technical papers on aerodynamics, gears, and flight mechanics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He now has his own web site, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howfliesthealbatross.com\/\">How Flies the Albatross<\/a><\/em>, where readers can interact with the flight of the albatross in simulated dynamic soaring conditions, with mathematical explanations of a very high order.\u00a0 Barnes took all the photographs of albatrosses in flight, and are another impressive facet of his abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Another segment provides an \u201cAerodynamic and Artistic Study\u201d of German jet fighters from World War II (still in draft form but pretty awe inspiring nonetheless), and a PowerPoint presentation on regenerative soaring, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.howfliesthealbatross.com\/downloadables\/regenerative_soaring_study.pdf\">Flight Without Fuel: Regenerative Soaring Theory<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Imagine a sailplane that self-launches using the battery power to its electric motor, but leaves its large propeller out in the breeze to regenerate energy and recharge itself.\u00a0 At first glance this could be seen as another perpetual motion scheme, but Barnes provides a detailed mathematical proof that the sailplane could enjoy a net gain in energy during its flights, allowing unlimited time in the air.\u00a0 He adds a solar option that would further increase the utility of the craft.<\/p>\n<p>Barnes draws on\u00a0Hermann Glauert&#8217;s\u00a0seminal 1926 paper and Paul MacCready&#8217;s 1998 presentation, which introduced the idea \u201cwith caution.\u201d\u00a0 Literally throwing caution to the winds, Barnes investigates the possibilities that Glauert called a \u201cwindmill on an aeroplane,\u201d and MacCready outlined as \u201cregenerative soaring, where in concept, an aircraft would incorporate energy storage, a propeller, and a wind turbine, or dual-role machine thereof, to propel the aircraft and regenerate stored energy in updrafts.\u201d\u00a0 Examining the dynamic soaring of the albatross, we can see the similarities to what Barnes has in mind, and the cross-currents of his thinking.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2852\" style=\"width: 536px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2852\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=2852\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2852\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2852 \" title=\"phil barnes regen 001\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/phil-barnes-regen-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"526\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/phil-barnes-regen-001.jpg 526w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/phil-barnes-regen-001-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phil Barnes&#39; regenerative soaring concept<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0The idea of regeneration implies a motor\/controller system that like an electric car\u2019s regenerative braking, puts energy back into the batteries when the motor is not providing power for the airplane.\u00a0 It would also require a highly efficient regenerative mode.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He notes that solar panels collecting 150 Watts per square meter would allow extended flight, but only on a augmentation basis and not as a primary power source.<\/p>\n<p>Knowledgeable readers can help him make this possible.\u00a0 Explaining that he hopes to create a model-airplane sized demonstrator, he\u00a0details his \u201cwish list\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<em>The system I&#8217;m searching for does this:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>1) Advance the throttle for prop operation<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>2) Pull back the throttle for regeneration in updrafts and in final descent<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; same rotation direction for windprop, but with 30% lower RPM during regeneration<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>3) &#8220;Pinwheeling&#8221; (torque-free) mode with throttle in &#8220;neutral&#8221; position<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>4) Windprop with\u00a0(preferably 8)\u00a0high-pitch blades and symmetrical sections<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; as in my attached package\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>5) Nice to have:\u00a0Record altitude, airspeed, GPS coordinates, and battery current (+\/-) as &#8220;flight-test data&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>His contact information is on the web site, exposure to which will inspire many grand ideas, some of which may provide feedback for Barnes&#8217;
