Following rigorous evaluations of all aircraft to ensure they meet all standards for the contest, Dr. Brien Seeley, President of the CAFE Foundation, announced the\u00a013 entrants who will compete in the Green Flight Challenge at Santa Rosa,\u00a0California between July 11 and 17, 2011.\u00a0 This exciting event will\u00a0offer the public a first view of some incredible designs and resourceful\u00a0competitors.\u00a0\u00a0Since the minimum performance required for consideration includes things such as the ability to fly a 200 mile course at 100 mph or better average speed, the ability to clear a 50-foot barrier on a 2,000 foot\u00a0runway during both takeoff and landing, and the efficiency to\u00a0attain at least 200 passenger miles per gallon during the overall flight, all aircraft are obviously the most efficient aerial creations yet seen.\u00a0 Rules were established to encourage designers to make “real world”, practical craft rather than specialized designs that could win the contest but find no real purpose or willing owners.\u00a0 Even things such as cockpit\u00a0design and visibility play a part in the designs, with every effort to bring designs to the\u00a0aviation public that will meet with broad acceptance.\u00a0 This can be a seminal moment in aviation, helping usher in a new era of environmentally sound, but exciting, high-performance ,\u00a0truly modern\u00a0airplanes.<\/p>\n

Embry-Riddle Green Eagle, a modified Stemme S-10 propelled by fuel cells and batteries<\/p><\/div>\n

Entrants include\u00a0seemingly every possible type of powerplant, an amazing array of configurations, and some obviously inspired design.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0Einar Enevoldson, team lead for the PC Aero\u00a0entry will field the\u00a0Elektra 1, a single-seater from Calin Gologan’s design team.\u00a0\u00a0With 21\u00a0kilowatts and a span of 27.6 feet, the aircraft will fly on electric power.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Gene Sheehan and the Fueling\u00a0Green Flight Challenger\u00a0team will fly an electric airplane that looks a lot like a\u00a0Quickie.\u00a0 Its 16 kW\u00a0electric motor will propel the 16.7 foot span, single-seat\u00a0craft around the course.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0Gregory Cole, head of Windward Performance\u00a0\u00a0in Oregon\u00a0has entered the two-seat\u00a0Goshawk, a 51-foot motorglider-like airplane\u00a0flying on either avgas or electric power.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Lawrence Speer will field the Greenelis PXLD, a tw0-seat diesel-fueled,\u00a030\u00a0kW\u00a0airplane of\u00a0 35.5 foot span.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0Mike Stude of Kansas will fly Wings of Salvacion, a single-seat, 32 kW,\u00a0\u00a016.7 wingspan, ethanol-fueled entry.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0Richard Anderson will bring Embry-Riddle Aeronautical\u00a0University’s entry from\u00a0Florida – the\u00a0EcoEagle, a hybrid-powered two-seat craft with a 75-foot wingspan.\u00a0 hybrid.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0\u00a0John W. McGinnis of Montana will fly\u00a0Synergy, a six-seat craft with 32-foot wing and 142 kW bio-diesel powerplant.<\/p>\n

8.\u00a0Greg Stevenson, GSE-Aerochia’s\u00a0Econo-Cruiser 3000 has two seats in tandem, a 48.3 foot wing, and a 15 kW\u00a0bio-fuel-hybrid power system.<\/p>\n

9.\u00a0 Ira Munn’s IKE Aerospace\u00a0entry,\u00a0SERAPH, is a single-seat,\u00a030 kW, 15-foot\u00a0biodiesel-hybrid.<\/p>\n

10.\u00a0Eric Raymond will bring e-Genius, an electrical aircraft with two seats, 60 kW, and a 55.4-foot wing.<\/p>\n

11.\u00a0Jim Lee of Phoenix Air (Florida) will fly a 44 kW, 47.3 span, electric tw0-seater.<\/p>\n

12.\u00a0Scott Sanford will bring the Yuneec\u00a0\u00a0E 1000, a three-seat, 120 kW electric airplane with 56-foot wingspan.<\/p>\n

13.\u00a0 Jack Langelaan will show the Pipistrel-Penn State University entry, a Taurus G4, a four-seat, 69.1-foot span craft with 145 kW of\u00a0electric power.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

U. S. citizen innovators in the CAFE Green Flight Challenge will apply and demonstrate aircraft technologies from all over the world.\u00a0\u00a0Power ranges from 15 kilowatts (20 horsepower) to 145 kW (194 hp).\u00a0 Wingspans go from 15 feet to 75 feet, and aircraft offer seating for one to six.\u00a0 Powerplants include all the possibilities, from pure electric to hybrids to bi-diesel and ethanol-fueled internal combustion units.\u00a0 This contest will field a broader range of aircraft than anything yet seen and should demonstrate the possibilities inherent when innovation and creativity are allowed free rein.<\/div>\n
