{"id":3020,"date":"2011-04-05T06:42:43","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T13:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=3020"},"modified":"2011-04-05T10:12:36","modified_gmt":"2011-04-05T17:12:36","slug":"mishap-to-aerovironment-global-observer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/mishap-to-aerovironment-global-observer\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Mishap&#8221; to AeroVironment Global Observer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It wasn&#8217;t an April Fool&#8217;s Day joke, even though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avinc.com\/uas\/stratospheric\/global_observer\/\">AeroVironment&#8217;s<\/a> press release is dated April 1.\u00a0 Their Global Observer crashed in the Mojave Desert during extended duration flight testing.\u00a0 AeroVironment stressed that there were\u00a0&#8220;No injuries or damage to other property reported during envelope expansion flight testing,&#8221; and that an &#8220;Investigation Board will be convened to probe the cause and provide details of the mishap.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mishap occurred at 2:30 a. m., approximately 18 hours into the craft&#8217;s ninth test flight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AeroVironment announces mishap with Global Observer flight test\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xFOOmfjmtWg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>AeroVironment&#8217;s press release\u00a0continues, \u201c&#8217;Flight testing an innovative new solution like Global Observer involves pushing the frontiers of technology and convention,&#8217; said Tim Conver, AeroVironment chairman and chief executive officer. &#8216;Risk is a component of every flight test program, and the learning that results from a mishap enables us to improve system reliability and performance. One benefit of testing an unmanned aircraft system is that pilots and crew are not in harm\u2019s way when a mishap occurs.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flight test team, composed of U. S. Government and AeroVironment personnel, &#8220;was in the process of expanding the flight envelope of the first air vehicle, which had been operating for nearly twice the endurance and at a higher altitude than previous flights when the mishap occurred.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ad4-3YGp0ak<\/p>\n<p>A second GO is nearly complete at AeroVironment&#8217;s development facility, so speculation that the flight test program may be delayed by a year may be premature, although the $140 million in funding from six U.
