(9.3 miles)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the 118 pounds of batteries now on board, the airplane has more than one hour endurance, but a proposed switch to hydrogen fuel cells will allow six-hour flights and make Mediterranean crossings a breeze.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3085\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3085\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=3085\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3085\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3085\" title=\"MC-30 with poster\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MC-30-with-poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MC-30-with-poster.jpg 400w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MC-30-with-poster-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking More tidy on display in Monaco<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If the team can keep the motor and controller cool.\u00a0 Reports show the controller shuts down when it reaches 320 Amps output \u2013 something that happens with an \u201caggressive\u201d setting on the ground-adjustable propeller to allow a good rate of climb.\u00a0 Jean-Luc experienced this at about 30 feet altitude on one takeoff, where an immediate shutdown\u00a0was least welcome.\u00a0 The team is exploring other options for the controller, possibly even doubling up on the current unit.\u00a0 A big problem is that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geigerengineering.de\/avionik\/elektroantriebssystem\/\">HPD-13.5 motor <\/a>is limited to 16 kW for limited times, pushing its performance to its limits.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LSA MC30E, ulm \u00e9lectrique\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jB1U6YUKc6w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Since their power system is essentially the same as that used by Calin Gologan on his Elektra One and the two aircraft are similar in performance, LSA\u2019s detailed weight listing for components is instructive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Bare cells (batteries): 54000 grams (118 pounds)<br \/>\nMotor and controller: 5500 grams (12.1 pounds)<br \/>\nPropeller: 2500 grams (5.5 pounds)<br \/>\nMounts and brackets: 1500 grams (3.3 pounds)<br \/>\nCables and connections: 500 grams (1.1 pounds)<br \/>\nEngine covers: 500 grams (1.1 pounds)<br \/>\nInstruments, systems RCOM, various: 3500 grams (7.7 pounds)<br \/>\nSubtotal: 68000 grams\u00a0 (a little over 149 pounds)<\/p>\n<p>Fabrice promised another speed record attempt the week of April 10, and the team has managed to deliver today in Friedrichshafen at Aero Expo.\u00a0 According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lsa-aerotechnics.com\/actualite_2320063.html\">team\u2019s web site<\/a>, \u201cLSA was in Germany to produce two world records (RAL 1E FAI) with Jean-Luc Soullier flying his MC-30E in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.\u00a0 These two records are: speed of 15 kilometers in a straight line and return [at] the maximum altitude.\u00a0 These records were made in Monaco banner.\u201d\u00a0 The latter would certainly encourage the Prince\u2019s interest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.pegase.tv\/viewtopic.php?f=3&amp;t=4978\">Jean-Luc and LSA&#8217;s open forum <\/a>includes the team&#8217;s tragedies and triumphs.\u00a0 Their first flights in September 2010 received little attention, but their latest public displays certainly shine a new light on their courage and conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Readers might be surprised to see Jean-Luc&#8217;s Colomban MC-15 Cri-Cri with Plettenberg model airplane motors on the first of 62 pages of the forum.\u00a0 That flew in 2009, and will be the topic for a future CAFE blog entry.\u00a0 Surprises abound.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fthe-electric-firefly-sets-two-world-records%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
