{"id":3500,"date":"2011-06-15T17:38:40","date_gmt":"2011-06-16T00:38:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=3500"},"modified":"2011-06-15T17:38:40","modified_gmt":"2011-06-16T00:38:40","slug":"solar-impulse-inspires-in-brussels-heads-to-paris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/solar-impulse-inspires-in-brussels-heads-to-paris\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Impulse Inspires in Brussels, Heads to Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On June 14, 2011, Andre&#8217; Borschberg guided the giant Solar Impulse from Brussels, Belgium, where the craft had spent the last week as the centerpiece of discussions on green energy and the future of transportation in the European Community, to Le Bourget Field just outside Paris.\u00a0 Nearing its destination, its daylong flight sometimes resembled the mathematical problem called, &#8220;the drunkard&#8217;s walk,&#8221; as Borschberg was vectored around the aerial neighborhoods surrounding Paris to make certain the lightly loaded craft did not run afoul of\u00a0 jetliners&#8217; wakes and could find a slot where the runway did not present residual turbulence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Solar Impulse - European Solar Flights Brussels-Paris\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p-1YfQyIRyQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>During the preceding week, VIPs from the European Community gathered aound the airplane in Brussels\u00a0to discuss the importance of this airplane and these flights.\u00a0 Their &#8220;Green Week&#8221; discussions evinced talk of necessity and sprouted\u00a0bits of inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Viviane Reding, a Vice- President of\u00a0 the European Union and Commissioner on\u00a0Climate Change, among other responsibilities, said the &#8220;event is emblematic&#8221; of what European research, humans, and strong character can accomplish.\u00a0 She lauded her friend Bertrand Piccard, co-founder of the Solar Impulse Project and added that she admired his ability to &#8220;make the impossible possible.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Siim Kallas, another Vice-President of the Union, and a Commissioner of Transportation, explained that Europe faces two\u00a0problems with future transportation, congestion and increasing difficulties in obtaining fuels.\u00a0\u00a0 He expressed the belief, &#8220;That we must move,&#8221; to overcome these issues.\u00a0 He expressed admiration for the project, and noted that if it&#8217;s possible for this airplane to fly on sunlight, other things are also possible.\u00a0 &#8220;If you want to be successful, you should not sleep,&#8221; he admonished, &#8220;and you should not miss this opportunity to develop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Solar Impulse -
