(EADS) showcased at least three  electric flight vehicles \u2013 two emonstrating current reality and one pointing  toward a cleaner future for short-to-medium range airliners.<\/p>\n<p>Cri-Cri, the four-motored, contra-rotating props on  stalks aerobatic wonder, did indeed perform at the 2011 Paris Air Show, doing  six-minute routines daily at the show.\u00a0 Didier Esteyne, the plane&#8217;s obviously accomplished pilot, explains things in this video.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=76h4VA3yoNI <\/p>\n<p>Emmanuel Joubert, Program Head for the All-electric  Cri-Cri at EADS, explained the plane\u2019s advantages.\u00a0 \u201cIn all-electric mode, the plane\u2019s  performance during climb and aerobatics is better compared to a conventional  aircraft of this type.\u00a0 This allows the  pilot to really have \u2018fun flying\u2019 \u2013 with no noise and high torque at low and  high speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of the light weight and small size of the  Cri-Cri, <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=1748\">initial flights <\/a>were limited to 20 minutes, but now run 30 minutes,  with further work\u00a0expected to lead\u00a0to 35-minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Joubert noted  that because of the small size of the craft, \u201cAll innovative concepts and  technologies applied in this platform need to be downscaled to a very small  size and very light weight, which leads researchers to be very creative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eads.com\/eads\/int\/en\/news\/press.5f6ebec1-87d4-4af2-a0d8-362f576e3575.4eb07896-3e59-4301-a243-e00d762cdb20.html\">EADS\u2019 press release<\/a>, \u201cThe combined utilization of these environmentally  friendly technical innovations enables the Cri-Cri to deliver novel  performance: 30 minutes of autonomous cruise flight at 110 kilometers per hour,  15 minutes of autonomous aerobatics at speeds reaching up to 250 km\/h, and a  climb rate of approximately 5.3 meters per second (1,017 feet per minute).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Partnering with Siemens AG and Diamond Aircraft, EADS displayed what they claim  is the world&#8217;s first aircraft with a serial hybrid electric drive system at Le  Bourget. \u00a0The two-seater motor glider is  being used to test the new system, which could provide up to a 25-percent  reduction in fuel use, and could be scaled up for larger aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DA 36 E-Star: first flight of an hybrid aircraft with range extender (EADS, Siemens)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pKIJP2ayY28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Siemens, provider of the power system, explains,\u00a0\u201cThe motor glider, which is based on  Diamond Aircraft&#8217;s HK36 Super Dimona, is the only aircraft of its kind in the  world. It is the first to use a so-called serial hybrid electric drive, which  has been utilized to date only in cars, as an integrated drive train. The  plane&#8217;s propeller is powered by a 70kW electric motor from Siemens. Electricity  is supplied by a small Wankel engine from Austro Engine with a generator that  functions solely as a power source. A Siemens converter supplies the electric<br \/>\nmotor with power from the battery and the generator. Fuel consumption is very  low since the combustion engine always runs with a constant low output of 30kW.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A battery system from EADS provides the increased power required during takeoff  and climb. Photo: Siemens AG<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eads.com\/eads\/int\/en\/news\/press.dd6d47cf-8edf-4a8f-b043-a5adaaf238b6.4eb07896-3e59-4301-a243-e00d762cdb20.html\">EADS also introduced a concept vehicle, VoltAir <\/a>(a  pun on the name of radical French writer Voltaire?), a zero-emission aircraft \u201cwhich  could become a reality 20 years from today\u201d according to EADS. \u00a0This project is included under the name &#8221; eCO2avia&#8221; by EADS Innovation Works as part of its work toward protecting the  environment.<\/p>\n<p>The project is  based on speculative assumptions about how the airplane\u2019s next-generation  batteries will \u201cexceed energy densities of 1000 Wh\/kg within the next two  decades,\u201d and power superconducting electric motors to drive counter-rotating shrouded  propellers.\u00a0 EADS predicts, \u201cCombined  with a radical approach to airframe design, the expected promising developments  in electric propulsion technologies could pave the way towards ultra-quiet and  emission-free flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jean Botti, Chief  Technical Officer of EADS, says the company is pursuing \u201cnew materials with  promising capabilities\u201d in its battery research, including lithium-air and lithium-sulfur based energy storage systems.<\/p>\n<p>EADS thinks that despite the high efficiency of modern conventional electric motors, they do not have the power density required for \u201clarge airborne missions,\u201d and is investigating High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) materials for VoltAir\u2019s propulsion.\u00a0 In flight, these motors would be cooled by liquid nitrogen (low-cost and environmentally friendly according to EADS).\u00a0 VoltAir\u2019s motors could deliver seven to eight kilowatts per kilogram, not that extreme compared to some existing motors.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers will benefit from the fuselage shape, wide compared to its height, unlike conventional round tubes on most modern airliners. \u00a0The superconducting motors, removed to the tail, will provide quiet power and only wind noise over the fuselage will require attenuation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EADS VoltAir electric airliner concept - Paris 2011\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PIHBDaySH6U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>EADS has a tremendous range of sizes and styles to choose from, and seems to be making a serious and concerted effort to move into the next level of electrification.\u00a0 All of aviation will benefit from their innovations.<\/p>\n<p><em>The origin of the term &#8220;hat trick&#8221; goes back into sporting history, being associated with a particularly skilled cricketeer who, while bowling,\u00a0managed to retire\u00a0three batsmen with three consecutive balls.\u00a0 According to the story, the other players passed the hat to take up a collection\u00a0in honor of his accomplishment.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Feads-pulls-off-electric-hat-trick-at-2011-paris-air-show%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the 2011 Paris Air Show at Le Bourget this week, the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company N.V.
