{"id":3875,"date":"2011-07-26T20:41:37","date_gmt":"2011-07-27T03:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=3875"},"modified":"2011-07-26T20:45:10","modified_gmt":"2011-07-27T03:45:10","slug":"elektra-one-flies-into-oshkosh-with-solar-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/elektra-one-flies-into-oshkosh-with-solar-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"Elektra One Flies Into Oshkosh with Solar Cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=2984\">described before <\/a>in this blog, <a href=\"www.pc-aero.de\">PC-Aero\u2019s Elektra One <\/a>is a single-seat electric airplane with an Eck\/Geiger 13.5 kilowatt motor in the nose, and now at least partially solar powered.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r03nim-6qBw&#038;feature=related<\/p>\n<p>Designer Calin Gologan gives a walkthrough of the design features which make Elektra One such an efficient airplane, and one likely to give other competitors in the Green Flight Challenge a good run.\u00a0 While he describes the thin carbon-fiber shells which comprise the airplane\u2019s primary structure, notice the light shining through.\u00a0 That thinness helps explain Elektra One\u2019s 100 kilogram (220 pounds) empty weight, only about 100 pounds of which is structure.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flytec.ch\/de\/e-drive\/e-drive-produkte.html\">The motor<\/a> is 4.7 kilogram (10.34 pounds) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobby-lobby.com\/spin_200_amp_opto_brushless_speed_control_3072_prd1.htm\">controller<\/a> is a 270 gram (9-1\/2 ounce) model airplane marvel.\u00a0 Batteries can add up to 100 kilograms and the pilot another 100 kilograms, making the strength-to-weight ratio of the craft rather impressive, and its payload carrying abilities among the greatest\u00a0for flying machines.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3880\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3880\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=3880\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3880\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3880\" title=\"elektra-one-solar-electric-plane-hr\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/elektra-one-solar-electric-plane-hr-528x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/elektra-one-solar-electric-plane-hr-528x187.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/elektra-one-solar-electric-plane-hr-300x106.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elektra One in flight, showing off its Solar World additions<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gologan claims a maximum range of 500 kilometers (310 miles) and an endurance of over four hours &#8211; more than good enough for the NASA\/CAFE Green Flight Challenge in which the airplane will compete in late September in Santa Rosa, California.\u00a0 The solar cells shown on the latest flying video can provide up to 15 percent of the energy required to keep Elektra One aloft.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elektra One.mov\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N1Xm_ii6pSE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Solar World supplies the cells which adorn the upper surfaces of the flaps,\u00a0stabilizer,\u00a0and outer wing panels on the airplane.\u00a0 As noted in their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarworld-usa.com\/news-and-resources\/news\/elektra-one-solar-plane.aspx\">press release<\/a>, \u201cSolarWorld and Germany&#8217;s PC Aero are working together to pioneer the world&#8217;s first comparatively affordable electric aircraft system complete with solar-equipped aircraft and solar-charging hangar.\u201d\u00a0 The companies are also working on an electric aircraft \u201cfilling station,\u201d a rarity which should become common in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>Calin Gologan will speak several times at this year\u2019s AirVenture, and display Elektra One in the show\u2019s Innovation Hangar, \u201cexcept at midday Wednesday, July 27, when it is expected to fly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The solar giant sees a great deal of significance in the little airplane.\u00a0 &#8220;\u2019Elektra One is emblematic of a future in mobility that relies on efficient and environmentally sound electric vehicles,\u2019 said Frank Asbeck, CEO of SolarWorld.\u00a0 \u2018We need to stop depending on fossil fuels \u2013 and their dirty, noisy use of scarce resources \u2013 to get from one place to another.
