{"id":3924,"date":"2011-08-03T09:36:37","date_gmt":"2011-08-03T16:36:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=3924"},"modified":"2014-02-12T15:02:06","modified_gmt":"2014-02-12T22:02:06","slug":"if-you-can-draw-it-we-can-print-it-in-3d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/if-you-can-draw-it-we-can-print-it-in-3d\/","title":{"rendered":"If You Can Draw It, We Can Print It \u2013 In 3D"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students and faculty at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soton.ac.uk\/mediacentre\/news\/2011\/jul\/11_75.shtml\">University of Southampton <\/a>on the southern English coast have created an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in just a week, from the initial design to the finished, flying object.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrinted\u201d from nylon on an EOS EOSINT P730 nylon laser sintering machine, the plane emerges from the device in successive layers and comes with hinges already in place, emulating the bearings, crank and headset-in-place <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=2999\">bicycle recently produced by EADS <\/a>(Airbus) using similar technology and materials.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aFFFiB_if18<\/p>\n<p>Part of a \u201cground-breaking\u201d course of study \u201cwhich enables students to take a Master&#8217;s Degree in unmanned autonomous vehicle (UAV) design,\u201d the Southampton University Layer Sintered Aircraft (SULSA) can be snap-fitted together in minutes without tools.<\/p>\n<p>SULSA has a 2-meter (6.4 feet) wingspan and an electric motor reputed to be \u201calmost silent\u201d in cruise mode (but not so much in launch mode as the video reveals).\u00a0 It is steadied by a \u201cminiature autopilot developed by Dr. Matt Bennett, one of the members of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the University, \u201cThis project has been led by Professors Andy Keane and Jim Scanlan from the University\u2019s Computational Engineering and Design Research group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Scanlon says: \u2018The flexibility of the laser sintering process allows the design team to re-visit historical techniques and ideas that would have been prohibitively expensive using conventional manufacturing. One of these ideas involves the use of a Geodetic structure. This type of structure was initially developed by Barnes Wallis and famously used on the Vickers Wellington bomber which first flew in 1936. \u00a0This form of structure is very stiff and lightweight, but very complex. If it was manufactured conventionally it would require a large number of individually tailored parts that would have to be bonded or fastened at great expense.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Keane adds: \u2018Another design benefit that laser sintering provides is the use of an elliptical wing planform. Aerodynamicists have, for decades, known that elliptical wings offer drag benefits. The Spitfire wing was recognized as an extremely efficient design but it was notoriously difficult and expensive to manufacture. Again laser sintering removes the manufacturing constraint associated with shape complexity and in the SULSA aircraft there is no cost penalty in using an elliptical shape.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SULSA is an early effort for postgraduate students who, beginning in September 2011, can \u201ctake part in a one year program covering the design, manufacture and operation of robotic vehicles.\u201d\u00a0 Such vehicles whether land, marine, or aerial, would be used in hostile environments or in areas where human involvement might be unsafe or \u201cuneconomic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn20737-3d-printing-the-worlds-first-printed-plane.html\">New Scientist <\/a><\/em>points out that traditional techniques tie a design to repeated manufacture on production lines.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the Wellington example.\u00a0 The industrial engineer who designed the extremely complex manufacturing process for the airplane received a knighthood. \u00a0All parts manufactured in centralized stamping facilities had to be numbered like a giant erector set, be totally interchangeable and shipped to diverse factories all over England, where the \u201ckits\u201dcould be marshaled and bolted\u00a0and riveted together by relatively unskilled workers.\u00a0 In service, the level of interchangeability was near perfect, and any part made in any factory could be\u00a0matched to components made in any other factory.\u00a0 An amazing 11,000 Wellingtons were produced this way.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3928\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3928\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/if-you-can-draw-it-we-can-print-it-in-3-d\/_49085969_wellington_bomber_624x490_2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3928\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3928\" title=\"_49085969_wellington_bomber_624x490_2\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/49085969_wellington_bomber_624x490_2-528x414.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/49085969_wellington_bomber_624x490_2-528x414.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/49085969_wellington_bomber_624x490_2-300x235.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/49085969_wellington_bomber_624x490_2.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wellington bomber showing complex structure, WWII production line<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Further consider modern composite construction, which requires highly accurate molds\u00a0that cannot be modified or \u201cimproved upon\u201d during a production run without great expense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo longer,\u201d its creators told <em>New Scientist<\/em>, \u201cwill one design of UAV <em>(Editor\u2019s Note: or, by inference, any airplane)<\/em> be repeatedly manufactured on a production line.
