{"id":398,"date":"2010-01-21T17:56:22","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T00:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=398"},"modified":"2010-02-04T12:03:53","modified_gmt":"2010-02-04T19:03:53","slug":"hybrid-hopes-or-hype","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/hybrid-hopes-or-hype\/","title":{"rendered":"Hybrid Hopes or Hype?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Batteries are achieving increasingly high capacities and outputs, though at a frustratingly slow pace, especially for those of us who want that much hoped-for lightweight power pack that will make the electric backpack helicopter of our dreams a practical reality.\u00a0 For cars, a viable and attractive alternative to pure battery use in hybrid propulsion is described in an <em>Earth2Tech<\/em> entry supplied by Dr. Seeley.\u00a0 That entry describes a three-step approach to making ultracapacitors and batteries into friendly allies in propusion. First, ultracaps should not compete with batteries, but enhance them. &#8220;Second, get creative to bring costs down quickly. Third, embrace the niche.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The big problem with batteries is being able to take in or put out large amounts of power without reaching a thermal meltdown point. Batteries are good at storing energy, though.\u00a0 Capacitors can take on or release large power bursts, but have only about 5-percent of the energy storage capacity per weight of the best lithium batteries at this time.\u00a0 Combining batteries and ultracapacitors may have a practical benefit, at least (for the time being) where weight is not as great an issue as it would be in an aerial vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The article points to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwire.com\/press-release\/Ioxus-Launches-100-Percent-US-Manufactured-Ultracapacitors-With-Higher-Power-Densities-1024891.htm\">Ioxus<\/a>, an American manufacturer of capacitors, pseudo-capacitors, and ultracapacitors, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energ2.com\/SiteTemplet.asp?tableName=content&amp;key=45\">EnerG2,<\/a> making new materials for ultracapacitors, as being influential in moving this effort forward. EnerG2&#8217;s nano-particle carbon materials allow more surface area for contact with electrolytes, and similar to the same reaction in batteries, greater power density for the capacitor.<\/p>\n<p>One company exploiting the concept of a battery\/ultracapacitor hybrid power system is <a href=\"http:\/\/afstrinity.com\/xh.htm\">AFS-Trinity <\/a>of Medina, Washington.\u00a0 It claims to have the first practical drive train for a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), the Extreme Hybrid\u2122, which combines the advantages of ultracapacitors and Lithium-ion batteries. Theoretically, the capacitors provide the power for swift acceleration or hill climbing and the batteries provide the energy for extended drives (up to 40 miles, anyway).\u00a0 Ultracapacitors, in this scenario, remove the load from the batteries and allow longer battery life, while enabling quick recharging from regenerative braking or downhill coasting.\u00a0 In their Saturn Vue prototype, this allowed the use of a smaller IC engine and claimed better gas mileage in engine only mode.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_514\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-514\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=514\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-514\" class=\"size-large wp-image-514\" title=\"xh-cutaway-AFS-Trinity\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xh-cutaway-AFS-Trinity2-528x368.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xh-cutaway-AFS-Trinity2-528x368.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xh-cutaway-AFS-Trinity2-300x209.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xh-cutaway-AFS-Trinity2.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AFS-Trinity ultracapacitor\/battery hybrid drive package<\/p><\/div>\n<dl><\/dl>\n<p>&#8220;The Extreme Hybrid\u2122 Plug-in drive train is composed of five primary subsystems: (1) advanced lithium batteries recharged at night with off-peak power from the grid; (2) Fast Energy Storage\u2122 using ultracapacitors for acceleration and regenerative braking; (3) advanced power electronics and control software; (4) internal combustion engine; and (5) electric traction motor and generator. In miles per petroleum gallon, the XH-150\u2122 plug-in hybrid SUV achieves 150 MPPG&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>That miles per petroleum gallon figure is premised on the 40 miles per day that the (perhaps mythical) average driver commutes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also based on an 80-percent use of electricity and only 20-percent hybrid powerplant utilization.
