{"id":4148,"date":"2011-08-22T13:40:23","date_gmt":"2011-08-22T20:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=4148"},"modified":"2011-08-22T15:10:22","modified_gmt":"2011-08-22T22:10:22","slug":"aero-pc-and-solarworld-ford-and-sunpower-light-up-transportation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/aero-pc-and-solarworld-ford-and-sunpower-light-up-transportation\/","title":{"rendered":"Aero-PC and SolarWorld, Ford and SunPower Light Up Transportation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With electric aircraft showing the possibilities of a greener future, it\u2019s rewarding to see similar efforts to produce cleaner, off-the-grid ground transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Calin Gologan had a gala week at AirVenture, speaking at the Electric Aircraft World Symposium to detail his Elektra One Green Flight Challenge entrant and to introduce his Elektra Two and Four two-seat and four-seat, respectively, electric aircraft.\u00a0 He was awarded the Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Prize (LEAP) for the quietest electric aircraft by Erik Lindbergh, Charles\u2019 grandson.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, July 30 saw Norbert Lorenzen, test pilot for PC-Aero and owner of a flight school near Landshut, Germany, take Elektra One for a spin around the Oshkosh airspace.\u00a0 Note Molt Taylor\u2019s Aerocar zipping by between the 15 and 18 second marks on the video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elektra One_demoflight EAA AirVenture 2011.mov\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n-kqFSZ7SQ8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On the ground, the airplane was dollied out for takeoff,\u201coverseen\u201d by the capable Howard Handelman, who also noted something that Gologan had confirmed to Brien Seeley, President of the CAFE Foundation.\u00a0 The SolarWorld solar cells on the wings and flying tail were real, but they weren\u2019t connected.\u00a0 There is some concern that, as mounted, they did not enhance the airflow.\u00a0 Whether they will be on the airplane and providing power will be a source of much interest for the Green Flight Challenge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_4179\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4179\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=4179\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4179\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4179\" title=\"Elektra One in Oshkosh_Copyright Shahn Sederberg_1\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Elektra-One-in-Oshkosh_Copyright-Shahn-Sederberg_11-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Elektra-One-in-Oshkosh_Copyright-Shahn-Sederberg_11-528x351.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Elektra-One-in-Oshkosh_Copyright-Shahn-Sederberg_11-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elektra One being dollied out of non-solar hangar at AirVenture. Photo courtesy PC-Aero and copyright by Shahn Sederberg<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A new embellishment showed up on the side of Elektra One at Oshkosh \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iabg.de\/unternehmen\/index_en.php\">IABG<\/a>, a central analysis and testing organization for the aeronautics industry and Ministry of Defense in Germany.\u00a0 One would expect this level of monitoring and evaluation for such an advanced product.\u00a0 This is the kind of\u00a0detail <em>Jane\u2019s All the World\u2019s Aircraft<\/em> reporters look for on MIGs and Chinese prototypes &#8211; and you get it here free.\u00a0 (Insert equivalent of smiley.)<\/p>\n<p>PC-Aero\u2019s solar hangar now has a new name \u2013  SunAirport, and its SolarWorld sponsor assists in Gologan\u2019s goals of flying  with zero CO2 emissions, using less energy and producing low noise at low  operating costs.\u00a0 According to Gologan,  Elektra One flies on only six kilowatts per hour \u2013 equal to about 100 light  bulbs.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, in either the great minds running  along the same paths truism, or the imitation is the sincerest form of flattery vein,  <a href=\"http:\/\/media.ford.com\/article_display.cfm?article_id=35036\">Ford<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/us.sunpowercorp.com\/about\/newsroom\/press-releases\/?relID=598277\">SunPower<\/a> announced a solar garage to complement the new Focus Electric.\u00a0 The 2.5 kilowatt rooftop panels would offset  the electricity needed to charge the car daily, adding up to about 3,000  kilowatt hours per year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4176\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4176\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=4176\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4176\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4176\" title=\"Ford and SunPower Offer Solar Power Energy Solution\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Ford_SunPower-528x484.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Ford_SunPower-528x484.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Ford_SunPower-300x275.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Ford_SunPower.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ford and SunPower&#39;s promo for their &quot;Drive Green for Life&quot; program<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Offered at a  base price of \u201cunder $10,000\u201d after federal tax credits, the garage solar  panels should be a popular introduction to green energy for many car-driving  households.\u00a0 Ford and SunPower Corp. are  promoting their \u201cDrive Green for Life\u201d program to incentivize sales of cars and  panels.\u00a0 According to SunPower President  and CEO Tom Werner, \u201cSunPower\u2019s innovative partnership with Ford is a win-win  for customers, providing a comprehensive sustainability program.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Drivers can check up on their cars though  the included residential monitoring system, \u201cwhich includes the ability to track the performance of  their solar system on the web or through an iPhone application,\u201d according to  the joint press release.<\/p>\n<p>Couple that  with Best Buy announcing sales of 240-volt home charging stations for the new  Focus, and we see the advent of consumer-based expansion of off-grid solutions  for future energy needs.\u00a0 The fact that  aircraft designers and their associates\u00a0have been\u00a0in the forefront of this adds the  hope that other creative approaches will engender even more useful trends.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=3750\">Howard Handelman<\/a>, who also spoke at AirVenture and to Dr. Birgit Weissenbach, the cordial and extremely helpful press liaison for PC-Aero, for their assistance with this entry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Faero-pc-and-solarworld-ford-and-sunpower-light-up-transportation%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With electric aircraft showing the possibilities of a greener future, it\u2019s rewarding to see similar efforts to produce cleaner, off-the-grid ground transportation.
