Briefly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/first-successful-manned-electric-helicopter-flight\/19716\/\">Gizmag <\/a><\/em>apparently beat everybody to this story, with even <em>Popular Science<\/em> quoting from the online gadget hunter\u2019s web site.<\/p>\n<p>They report that in mid-August 2011, Pascal Chretien piloted his creation, a coaxial rotor, twin Lynch-motored helicopter that he built for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solutionf.com\/\">Solution F<\/a>, a Swiss racing engine development firm.\u00a0 He performed the flight \u201cin the presence of a court appointed witness,\u201d according to a press release from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lithiumbalance.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=136%3Afirst-manned-electric-helicopter-flies&amp;catid=8%3Anewsfeed&amp;Itemid=163&amp;lang=en\">Lithium Balance<\/a>, the firm that supplied the battery management system (BMS) for and acted as consultants to the project.\u00a0 The \u201cfirst\u201d Chretien claims is a carefully parsed one, an \u201cuntethered, fully electric manned helicopter flight in a prototype machine.\u201d\u00a0 The fact that he designed and built a unique machine and flew it in a 12 month span makes the two minute, 10 second flight all the more remarkable.\u00a0 Solution F asked for a 10 to 12 minute flight, so more news will be coming, undoubtedly.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4303\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4303\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=4303\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4303\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4303\" title=\"Chretien electronics\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Chretien-electronics-528x418.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Chretien-electronics-528x418.png 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Chretien-electronics-300x237.png 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Chretien-electronics.png 770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Battery management system - the most complex part of the helicopter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As Lithium Balance notes, \u201cWith degrees in Electronics and Aeronautical Engineering along with a commercial pilot\u2019s license, Pascal had all the ingredients except one &#8211; battery systems expertise,\u201d which the firm was happy to supply. \u00a0They used Kokam pouch-type lithium-polymer batteries with their BMS monitoring and controlling charging and discharging.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanical parts were more to Chretien\u2019s liking, with his use of welded 7020 aluminum tubing for the frame (a choice over the longer development time for composites), coaxial blades to simplify controls and eliminate the need for a tail rotor (which would have drained power from the main rotors), and a combination of varying the speed of the two rotors to give yaw control, and using weight shift by the pilot for pitch and roll controls. \u00a0The designer even built a \u201cpendular\u201d simulator on which he could practice control movement and body control before actually attempting flight on his machine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4304\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4304\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=4304\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4304\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4304\" title=\"chretien dual motors control system\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/chretien-dual-motors-control-system.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/chretien-dual-motors-control-system.png 299w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/chretien-dual-motors-control-system-134x300.png 134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dual Lynch motors, pulley system and simplified control system<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cUltra-lightweight inverters\u201d from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kruspan.ch\/\">Kruspan<\/a> control the Lynch brushed motors and a simple pulley system supplies power to the rotors.\u00a0 The light weight and simplicity of the design undoubtedly helped Chretien achieve his initial goal.<\/p>\n<p>As Lithium Balance explains, \u201cAs much as possible was simulated and tested using CAE (computer aided engineering) before being built and Kokam had to supply video evidence of the pack running at 5C continuously without overheating, after all as Pascal said \u2018I don&#8217;t want to be a barbecued frog!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4305\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4305\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=4305\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4305\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4305\" title=\"chretien flying\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/chretien-flying-528x425.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/chretien-flying-528x425.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/chretien-flying-300x241.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/chretien-flying.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pascal Chretien in flight - a noteable first <\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Gizmag<\/em> expanded on the exothermic exigencies of the power source.\u00a0 \u201cThe rechargeable battery cells are Lithium ion polymer pouch cells, with an energy density of 160 Watt-hours per kg. Although reasonably lightweight, these cells presented probably the biggest danger to Chretien in the test flight phase. As he puts it: \u2018The infamous thermal instability of lithium\/cobalt chemistry does not leave room for error&#8230; It is important to take it slowly, if I don&#8217;t want to wreck tens of thousands of Euros worth of hardware; but also, in case of crash I stand good chances to end up in kebab form, as LiPo batteries are notoriously infamous for bursting to flames once distorted. The chemical reaction is violently exothermic.
