{"id":4426,"date":"2011-09-21T09:09:34","date_gmt":"2011-09-21T16:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=4426"},"modified":"2011-09-21T09:09:35","modified_gmt":"2011-09-21T16:09:35","slug":"saving-the-air-while-saving-crops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/saving-the-air-while-saving-crops\/","title":{"rendered":"Saving the Air While Saving Crops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>AvWeb <\/em>this morning reports on a \u201chighly cost-effective\u201d way to make jet biofuel from renewable materials.\u00a0 According to <em>AvWeb<\/em>, San Francisco-based, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aliphajet.com\/\">AliphaJet<\/a> said its catalytic method uses materials derived from plants and animals such as triglycerides and fatty acids. \u00a0\u2018Our strategy fundamentally improves the economics of making 100-percent drop-in renewable jet biofuel,\u2019 said Jack Oswald, CEO of AliphaJet. \u2018Our approach is radically different and unlocks a new industry that can meet the U.S. Navy&#8217;s goal of replacing 50 percent of its liquid fuels with renewables by 2020.\u2019<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4428\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4428\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=4428\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4428\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4428\" title=\"img_flow_graphic\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/img_flow_graphic-528x448.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/img_flow_graphic-528x448.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/img_flow_graphic-300x254.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/img_flow_graphic.jpg 545w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AliphaJet process flow<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAliphaJet said its catalytic de-oxygenation process \u2018significantly reduces capital and operating costs\u2019 because it does not require the use of hydrogen in processing. That means the processing plant can be less complex, reducing capital costs. It also saves money because the biofuel can be produced close to the site of the raw materials, without the need to be close to a hydrogen source. The company says its process can also produce renewable drop-in diesel fuel, gasoline and other hydrocarbon molecules usually derived from fossil fuel oil. A variety of raw materials can be used, including algae, certain seeds and vegetables such as camelina and soy, and animal fats. AliphaJet is a collaborative venture between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.syngest.com\/\">SynGest<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/uniteltech.com\/\">Unitel Technologies<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s address, 310 Green Street, San Francisco, seems like a good omen.<\/p>\n<p>Other producers are working on this once seemingly\u00a0intractable problem of providing fuel without affecting food crops, as reported regularly in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenaironline.com\/\">Green Air Online<\/a><\/em>, an on-line compendium of alternative fuels and green aviation.\u00a0 Green Air\u2019s reporting shows the depth and breadth of airline industry support and industry\u2019s response to these needs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/sectionhome\/sectiondefault.aspx?NavigationID=502&amp;CategoryID=10829&amp;SlotID=31\">Flight Global<\/a>, the online partner to <em>Flight International<\/em> magazine, has an Environment section that regularly reports on the developments in this area, a big part of European planning, and one that will definitely grow in America.<\/p>\n<p>Further evidence that this line of research is beyond the academic is in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icao.int\/sustaf\/\">Aviation and Sustainable Alternative Fuels Workshop <\/a>planned for October 18 through 20 in Montreal, Canada.\u00a0 \u00a0It is just one of several such forums, conferences and expos dealing with the problem of fueling a thirsty industry without disrupting global food supplies.<\/p>\n<p>According to the ICAO web site, \u201cThis ICAO Workshop provides a forum for the exchange of information on the state of worldwide activities on sustainable alternative fuels for aviation.
