In current normal practice, the jets, with their engines at idle, are pushed onto a taxiway, at which point the tug disengages and the jet throttles up to begin the usually long taxi to a waiting runway.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5214\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=5214\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5214\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5214\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5214\" title=\"553safranhoneywellelectrictaxi\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/553safranhoneywellelectrictaxi-528x361.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/553safranhoneywellelectrictaxi-528x361.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/553safranhoneywellelectrictaxi-300x205.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/553safranhoneywellelectrictaxi.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Safran and Honeywell electric main gear on Airbus A-320<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Quirkily capitalized <a href=\"http:\/\/www.safran-group.com\/site-safran-en\/press-media\/press-releases\/2012-785\/article\/easyjet-first-airline-to-trial\">easyJet,<\/a> the United Kingdom\u2019s largest airline, is working with<a href=\"http:\/\/honeywellnow.com\/\"> Honeywell <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.safran-group.com\/\">Safran<\/a> to develop and test their version of this new technology, which they label the electric green taxiing system (EGTS).<\/p>\n<p>EGTS-equipped aircraft can taxi without the use of their jet engines by using the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) generator to power motors in the main wheels. Electromechanical actuators on each of the aircraft\u2019s powered wheels and what would need to be fairly-sophisticated motor controllers provide \u201ctotal control of the aircraft\u2019s speed, direction and braking during taxi operations.\u201d Reducing or eliminating the need for tugs would greatly improve airports\u2019 bottom lines, too.<\/p>\n<p>EGTS on its fleet may lead to further improvements in easyJet\u2019s proudly touted environmental record. \u201cThe airline takes sustainability seriously. easyJet invests in the latest technology, operates efficiently and fills most of its seats which means that an easyJet passenger\u2019s carbon footprint is 22% less than a passenger on a traditional airline, flying the same aircraft on the same route.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the high frequency and short sector lengths of easyJet\u2019s operations, around 4% of total fuel consumed annually is used when the airline\u2019s aircraft are taxiing. easyJet\u2019s aircraft average 20 minutes of taxi time per flight \u2013 the equivalent of 3.5 million miles a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With operational trials scheduled for 2013, Honeywell and Safran hope to install EGTS on new aircraft or retrofit the system to in-service airliners \u201cas early as 2016.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0If the system works as planned and provides the estimated savings,\u201d easyJet \u201cwill also assist in establishing the airline standard operational procedures for aircraft equipped with the system,\u201d company sources report.<\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa has tried one approach \u2013 using a powered nose wheel driven by a fuel cell developed by Germany\u2019s space agency DLR (<a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=2869\">detailed in this blog last year<\/a>) \u2013 and a second with powered main wheels created by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lufthansa-technik.com\/applications\/portal\/lhtportal\/lhtportal.portal?requestednode=395&amp;_pageLabel=Template7_8&amp;_nfpb=true&amp;webcacheURL=TV_I\/Media-Relations-new\/Press-Releases\/E_Taxi_Demonstration_EN.xml\">L3 Communications, Fraport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa Technik installed electric motors on the main landing gear of a commercial aircraft taking over all necessary movements of an aircraft on ground. with Airbus support, the various partners teamed up \u201cto jointly test the technology demonstrator which might lead to a new way for aircraft to taxi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"L-3 and Lufthansa get moving with e-taxi demonstrator\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lhq48BXoYHc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa Technik says L3 \u201cleverages its industry-leading electric motors\u00b4 continuous torque and power density to propel the aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The test Airbus A320 aircraft had the motors installed, along with an interface in the cockpit and a power supply from the APU with an integrated cooling system.<\/p>\n<p>Five days of testing included \u201ctypical duty cycles\u201d such as pushing the airplane back from its simulated jetway location, and taxiing in from and out to a runway \u2013 all of which were repeated several times. The three partners can use the \u201cmassive amount of data\u201d collected to fine tune and develop a production version of the technology. Robert Nyenhuis, Vice President Aircraft Engineering at Lufthansa Technik says, &#8220;Our common goal is to further develop the e-taxi demonstrator. Thanks to the testing we now have the data set to make sound decisions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The collaborator&#8217;s press release concludes, &#8220;&#8216;This revolutionary e-taxi system utilizes green technology to improve aircraft autonomy and provide more environmentally friendly ground operations,&#8217; said Joe Hoffman, Vice President and Executive Program Manager of L-3\u00b4s team. &#8216;Studies demonstrate single aisle airplanes can burn greater than three percent of total mission fuel during ground operations.
