{"id":5618,"date":"2012-04-23T10:03:24","date_gmt":"2012-04-23T17:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=5618"},"modified":"2012-04-23T10:03:24","modified_gmt":"2012-04-23T17:03:24","slug":"quiet-planes-make-good-neighbors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/quiet-planes-make-good-neighbors\/","title":{"rendered":"Quiet Planes Make Good Neighbors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With this year\u2019s Electric Aircraft Symposium just a few days away, the next few blog entries will close out reviews of presentations from EAS V.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oai.org\/aeroacoustics\/current\/Ahuja.html\">Krish J. Ahuja<\/a>, Regents Professor at the School of Aerospace Engineering and the head of the Aerospace and Acoustics Technology Division at Georgia Institute of Technology, talked on \u201cQuiet Propulsion for Small Electric Aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ahuja came with great credentials, including his 1993 AIAA Aeroacoustics Award and being listed as one of top 50 Innovators by Aerospace magazine, 1995 and one of top 50 Technology leaders in the US by Industry Week Magazine.<\/p>\n<p>He started by examining the sources of aircraft noise.\u00a0 Internal combustion engines (ICEs) are inherently noisy, but propellers add to that noise by their thickness, speed of rotation and the amount of loading they bear in producing thrust.\u00a0 Converting air from low to high pressure as it moves through the propeller\u2019s blades generates noise.<\/p>\n<p>Most annoying, the rasping shriek that comes from propeller blade tips nearing the sonic barrier is often heard in aerobatic demonstration acts.\u00a0 While it may thrill airshow crowds, it does not endear airports to neighboring communities. \u00a0Keeping blade tips below Mach 0.65-0.70 reduces the formation of shock waves and the associated noise.\u00a0 Having more blades on a propeller and shaping each blade in the form of a scimitar helps reduce the load on each blade and allows lower rpms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5619\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=5619\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5619\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5619\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5619\" title=\"9454275-wood-aircraft-propeller-and-radial-engine\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/9454275-wood-aircraft-propeller-and-radial-engine-528x349.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/9454275-wood-aircraft-propeller-and-radial-engine-528x349.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/9454275-wood-aircraft-propeller-and-radial-engine-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/9454275-wood-aircraft-propeller-and-radial-engine.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5619\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From the dawn of aviation - the propeller we&#39;re used to seeing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Ahuja noted that electric motors can be noisy, too, with contributions coming from their internal workings and makeup and the motor\u2019s installation in an airframe.\u00a0 As with gas-powered engines, electric motors get noisier with speed, and their structural and aerodynamic surroundings can amplify that noise.<\/p>\n<p>Things will need to get very quiet before they allow neighborhood air parks to become a reality. \u00a0Dr. Ahuja explained that a typical neighborhood has an ambient noise level of around 60-65 dBa, and that propeller noise would need to be 12 dBa lower (48-53 dBa) to be masked by the normal background.\u00a0 Since decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale and 3 dBa represents a doubling of sound pressure, this would be a level four orders of magnitude lower than normal quiet street noise.<\/p>\n<p>Propeller design can lower noise levels, but Dr. Ahuja suggested that active noise control somewhat similar to what happens in noise-cancelling headsets could hush aircraft sound, and that simply \u201csynchro-phasing\u201d propellers on multi-engine craft to the same rotational speed could lower interior sound levels 8 dBa.\u00a0 This could be done without weight penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Writing from daily experience, this writer hears a Beech Baron from a local flight school fly overhead several times a day.\u00a0 Assuming the student pilots are following roughly the same pattern and altitudes, it is amazing how noticeable the difference in sound levels is when the engine speeds are relatively close or horribly out of synch.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5622\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=5622\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5622\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5622\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5622\" title=\"bladeless-fan-how-it-works\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/bladeless-fan-how-it-works.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/bladeless-fan-how-it-works.gif 350w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/bladeless-fan-how-it-works-300x177.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5622\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Could we get rid of the propeller? Maybe<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He suggested other means, such as channel wings which would direct sound away from the ground, or acoustically-lined ducts that would shroud a propeller totally \u2013 all while increasing thrust.\u00a0 Noting that electric motors don\u2019t suffer from scale effects as ICEs do, he examined spreading a number of small electric motors along a wing, all driving smaller, lower-noise propellers, as was done on the AeroVironment Helios and Pathfinder.<\/p>\n<p>Tying in with Robert Englar\u2019s talk, he suggested circulation control that vented thrust from props through wing trailing edges, or even an adaptation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/electronics.howstuffworks.com\/gadgets\/home\/dyson-bladeless-fan.htm\">Dyson \u201cbladeless\u201d fan<\/a>, which circulates air through a circular outlet and accelerates it.\u00a0 What Dyson fails to mention in its promotions, though, is the bladed fan in the base of the fan, essentially a version of Englar\u2019s directed and channeled thrust.<\/p>\n<p>At the empirical level, Dr. Ahuja\u2019s students mounted two- and six-bladed propellers to an engine, set the engine on a stand in a pickup bed, and did drive-by noise measurements.\u00a0 True to theory, the six-bladed prop showed an 18.7 dB sound reduction over the two-blader.<\/p>\n<p>Configuring propellers is also essential to enhancing quietness, with special emphasis on blade count, thickness (especially at the tip) and geometry, with scimitar-shaped tips and their increasing sweep lowering noise.<\/p>\n<p>Lowering aircraft noise will enable friendly relations with airport neighbors and calmer, less stressful flights for pilots and their passengers \u2013 surely a win, win, win situation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fquiet-planes-make-good-neighbors%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With this year\u2019s Electric Aircraft Symposium just a few days away, the next few blog entries will close out reviews of presentations from EAS V.
