Piezoelectrics Have Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two far-flung enterprises are using piezoelectric devices to generate answers to widely disparate questions.<\/p>\n<p>The first set of questions is intensely personal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan a heart implanted micro robot operate permanently?<br \/>\n\u201cCan cell phones and tiny robots implanted in the heart operate permanently without having their batteries charged?<\/p>\n<p>These provocative questions highlight a web page from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaist.edu\/edu.html\">KAIST<\/a>, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, which focuses on the Institute\u2019s work with piezoelectric devices.\u00a0 Such devices can tranform vibrations, pressure, and other mechanical forces into an electric current.\u00a0 Older \u201chi-fi\u201d systems used piezoelectric cartridges in their LP-playing tone arms to transduce the vibrations from a needle touching the record\u2019s grooves into signals to the system\u2019s amplifier.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5837\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=5837\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5837\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5837\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5837\" title=\"thin film nanogenerator\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/thin-film-nanogenerator-528x481.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/thin-film-nanogenerator-528x481.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/thin-film-nanogenerator-300x273.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/thin-film-nanogenerator.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5837\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thin-film nanogenerator can produce power from very small physical movements<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Zhong Lin Wang explains, \u201cOur FAND (Flexible and Nano-bio-energy Device Lab) group has developed new forms of highly efficient flexible nanogenerator technology using freely bendable piezoelectric ceramic thin film nano-materials and nanocomposite materials that can convert the tiny movements of human body (such as heart beats and blood flow) into electricity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Self-powered  Thin Film Nanogenerator by Finger\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tvj0SsBqpBw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/low-cost-large-area-piezoelectric-nanogenerator\/22468\/\">Gizmag<\/a>, this first self-powered nanodevice has its own wireless transmitter, allowing monitoring of a patient\u2019s vitals remotely without the usual bulky hookups.\u00a0 Better yet, as long as the monitoree is alive and kicking, he or she will generate enough energy to keep the monitoring device active.\u00a0 Battery or device replacements could be a thing of the past for bearers of defibrillators and heart pumps.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at a larger footprint, so to speak, piezoelectric pads in shoes could generate enough power \u2013 about 3 Watts \u2013 from the wearer\u2019s walking to run an IPad, cell phone or MP3 player.\u00a0 According to Gizmag, the devices have an energy conversion efficiency of about seven percent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u2019The generator is mainly made of plastics and zinc oxide, so the materials are environmentally friendly,\u2019 says Wang.\u201d\u00a0 The materials stand up to thousands of flex cycles and show no reduction in performance, highly important to the pacemaker set.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the success the research team achieved was in making ceramic materials with a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perovskite\">perovskite structure<\/a> part of an easily manufactured product. \u00a0\u00a0Since these calcium titanium oxide minerals are so brittle, FAND\u2019s ability to make a \u201cbio-eco friendly nanogenerator that is freely bendable without breakdown\u201d is a major achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia lists, \u201cPhysical properties of interest to\u00a0materials science\u00a0among perovskites include[ing]\u00a0superconductivity,\u00a0magnetoresistance,\u00a0ionic conductivity, and a multitude of dielectric properties, which are of great importance in microelectronics and\u00a0telecommunication.\u201d\u00a0 The implications are far-reaching and not un-noticed by other researchers.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/adma.201200150\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\">Wiley Advanced Materials<\/a><\/em> published the team\u2019s Paper (PDF) in its April issue of the online journal.<\/p>\n<p>Other researchers include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innowattech.co.il\/index.aspx\">Innowattech<\/a>, an Israeli company testing the larger limits of piezoelectric capabilities.\u00a0 If a pair of shoes with an average size person in them can make 3 Watts, what would highway traffic or trains rolling over rails generate?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Innowattech Alternative Energy Harvesting System\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KW-GxSFSy3w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Their web site discusses the new technology, \u201cWhich enables harvesting and conversion of mechanical energy of the passing vehicles, wasted throughout movement, into electrical energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mechanical energy is derived from the compression stress created during the vehicles&#8217; travel on road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Innowattech\u2019s Weigh In Motion (I-WIM) system produces electrical energy as a function of the number of vehicles, their weight and velocity.\u00a0 Pressure transducers can be installed in concrete or asphalt roads, and a short stretch of test road has been installed and is generating electricity.<\/p>\n<p>According to their spokesperson, the system can provide 200 kilowatt hours per hour on average for a one-kilometer (0.62 mile) single lane of highway, enough to power 250 homes. \u00a0Innowattech notes that installation can take place during repaving of existing roads, since the generators are only five centimeters (two inches) under the road surface.\u00a0 This has the added benefit of using existing infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>This infrastructure can include railroads, sidewalks, and even industrial plants.\u00a0 The pressure imparted by drop presses to the floor could generate significant amounts of electricity and help power the facility.<\/p>\n<p>In aviation, the pressure of a jetliner rolling on a runway or taxiway could help power the airport, and the pressure of a landing \u00a0jumbo jet could generate as much as three megawatts of energy, according to other sources.<\/p>\n<p>Whether at the nano or the macro scale, piezoelectrics have a profound future in the overall scheme of things.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fnano-to-macro-piezoelectrics-have-power%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
