{"id":6164,"date":"2012-06-29T22:42:35","date_gmt":"2012-06-30T05:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=6164"},"modified":"2012-06-29T22:44:08","modified_gmt":"2012-06-30T05:44:08","slug":"battery-prices-and-lithium-futures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/battery-prices-and-lithium-futures\/","title":{"rendered":"Battery Prices and Lithium Futures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>EV World<\/em> has a weekly email update to which your editor subscribes.\u00a0 Because they provide a collection of articles and opinions from different sources, one often comes away questioning trends and even facts \u2013 or sometimes the meaning of it all.<\/p>\n<p>This week, an article referenced from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1077100_are-electric-car-batteries-already-at-250-per-kwh-analyst-says-yes\">Green Car Reports<\/a><\/em> says that EV batteries may already have fallen to $250 per kilowatt hour.\u00a0 This would be a godsend for sales of battery-powered cars, because sticker prices would drop sharply.\u00a0 \u00a0The article quotes Wolfgang Bernhart, a partner at Rolan Berger Strategy Consultants, that battery prices are already much lower than previous predictions would have indicated, possibly as low as $250 per kilowatt hour.\u00a0 His analysis credited economies of scale for this drop, which is based on 2015 demand.<\/p>\n<p>This paradoxical approach notes that battery manufacturers must begin planning production now for 2015 EVs, with prices quoted to those manufacturers based on that future demand.\u00a0 Such prices would be an optimistic five years ahead of their predicted 2020 levels.\u00a0 The number is based on anticipated sales figures for EVs three years out \u2013 predictive behavior always being a bit tricky.<\/p>\n<p>Bernhart explains, \u201cAll our bottom up calculations, as well as the purchase prices that we hear from OEMs, leads us to a cost level of $250\/kWh. \u00a0That\u2019s the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1077100_are-electric-car-batteries-already-at-250-per-kwh-analyst-says-yes\">price<\/a>\u00a0level we see in the market for 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The $250 figure is for the battery cells only, and does not include casings, wiring and battery management modules.\u00a0 Tossing those things into the mix, which are reputed to add up to 20 percent to the cell\u2019s cost, \u00a0and facing today\u2019s small production volumes causes batteries for the 2012 Ford Focus Electric to cost between $522 and $600 per kilowatt-hour.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.boston.com\/2012-06-21\/business\/32337550_1_lithium-ion-lithium-ion-battery-hybrid-cars\">June 21 Boston Globe<\/a> notes that, \u201cInvestors from JP Morgan Chase &amp; Co. to BlackRock are trying to make money from the exploding popularity of iPads and increasing sales of hybrid cars by investing in producers of lithium for batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a billion-dollar market, prices for lithium have tripled since 2000 and demand for the \u201cconductive metal\u201d is predicted to double by 2020.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6167\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6167\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6167\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6167\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6167\" title=\"smith-electric-newton-standard-630\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/smith-electric-newton-standard-630-528x336.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/smith-electric-newton-standard-630-528x336.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/smith-electric-newton-standard-630-300x190.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/smith-electric-newton-standard-630.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smith&#39;s Newton Truck, likely to increase demand for batteries- but will rising lithium prices counter?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Doubling global use of lithium from 2000 to 2011 and growing demand for Asian rechargeable lithum cells has helped prices rise threefold in that period.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Globe, \u201cThere will be a \u2018\u2019step change,\u2019\u2019 in the global lithium industry in 2016 or 2017 when electric cars became more common, Rockwood chief executive Seifollah Ghasemi said. Hybrid electric vehicles that are fitted with a lithium- ion battery contain about 1.3 kilograms (2.9 pounds) of the material, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have about 12.8 kilograms, while an electric vehicle uses about 19.2 kilograms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although requiring much less of the metal for each unit, Apple\u2019s iPad is projected to sell 107.4 million of their addictive electronic wonders this year.\u00a0 That international demand is challenged by the growing need for more batteries for vehicles, perhaps leading to the 52-percent rise in share prices for A123 systems on June 12, following the announcement of an improved lithium-ion cell that could cut costs of electric vehicles and offer improved performance in a wider temperature range than today\u2019s cells.\u00a0 The blog will report on this new battery shortly.<\/p>\n<p>The company supplies batteries for GM, BMW, China\u2019s SAIC Motor Corp., Daimler AG, Volvo AB, and Smith Electric Vehicles Corp., which makes delivery trucks.\u00a0 Large trucks require 20 times as many batteries per vehicle as even full electric cars, which will place huge manufacturing demands on battery companies and increased stress on the lithium market. Adaption of the more powerful lithium cells in place of older nickel-cadmium batteries is also driving demand.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6168\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6168\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6168\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6168\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6168 \" title=\"a123-livonia\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/a123-livonia-528x362.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/a123-livonia-528x362.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/a123-livonia-300x206.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/a123-livonia.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A123&#39;s Livonia, Michigan plant - large enough to reduce battery costs despite rising lithium prices?<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20120327005446\/en\/Li-ion-Battery-Costs-Fall-397kWh-2020-Mass\">BusinessWire reports<\/a> that Lux Research, a research consultancy which, \u201cProvides strategic advice and on-going intelligence for emerging technologies\u201d, lists three reasons for continuing high costs of batteries, which they see falling to no lower than $397 per kilowatt-hour by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaterials improvement and scale are insufficient to cut costs. While scale does have a significant impact in driving costs down, it is not likely to lead to a disruptive drop in battery pack costs unless coupled with other innovations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCathodes remain the biggest target. Cathode capacity and voltage improvement hold much more value than anode innovation. In the optimal case, with a maximum voltage increase of 1V and capacity increase of 200 [milliamp hours per gram], the nominal pack cost dropped 20%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond Li-ion remains a focus. Technologies such as Li-air, Mg-ion (magnesium iron), Li-S (lithium sulfur) and solid-state batteries push past the limitations of Li-ion batteries and achieve higher energy densities and specific energies. Each technology has its supporters \u2013 PolyPlus and IBM for Li-air, Toyota for Mg-ion, Sion Power and BASF for Li-S and Sakti3 for solid state batteries \u2014 but all face significant obstacles. A clear leading contender that can meet strict requirements on cycle life, power performance, and manufacturability has yet to emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These contending factors and competing analyses leave one unclear as to which directions the battery market and lithium futures are taking.\u00a0 Despite the uptick in A123\u2019s stock price, one has to remember the extreme drop in stock prices the company has faced since its Initial Public Offering (IPO).<\/p>\n<p>With electric vehicles showing alternating signs of broader sales and market neglect, there is a listlessness in the market that will require a stronger trend to determine if there really will be a strong, ongoing demand, and if that will lead to greater production and lower costs for batteries.\u00a0 Or will speculation in lithium lead to volatility in pricing as has reputedly happened in oil futures?<\/p>\n<p>As suggested by <em>BusinessWire<\/em>, changes in technology and chemistries may make all these surmises moot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fbattery-prices-and-lithium-futures%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EV World has a weekly email update to which your editor subscribes.\u00a0 Because they provide a collection of articles and opinions from different sources, one often comes away questioning trends and even facts \u2013 or sometimes the meaning of it all.
