{"id":6212,"date":"2012-07-09T11:39:55","date_gmt":"2012-07-09T18:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=6212"},"modified":"2012-07-09T11:39:56","modified_gmt":"2012-07-09T18:39:56","slug":"thats-no-yolk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/thats-no-yolk\/","title":{"rendered":"That&#8217;s No Yolk!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Cui is at it again!\u00a0 In a seemingly endless stream of announcements, his work with silicon anodes keeps promising improvements in battery capacity and longevity.\u00a0 The Stanford professor and his team, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.slac.stanford.edu\/features\/new-nanostructure-batteries-keeps-going-and-going\">Stanford\u2019s National Accelerator Laboratory <\/a>(Formerly the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center), and the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emsl.pnl.gov\/news\/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=377\"> Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory<\/a> (EMSL) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory all published papers on their latest joint accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6216\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6216\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6216 aligncenter\" title=\"yolk shell battery\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/yolk-shell-battery.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/yolk-shell-battery.gif 500w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/yolk-shell-battery-300x131.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_6216\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 510px;\">\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Conceptual drawing of silicon filling carbon shell, TEM photo of actual expansion, and life cycle analysis for yolk-shell batteries<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Expansion and contraction of anodes and cathodes during charging and discharging of batteries causes flexing and eventual breakdown of a battery\u2019s internal components.\u00a0 Cui and other researchers have tried various strategies to mitigate or eliminate this flexing, but the latest tactic seems to promise longer battery life and greater power and energy.<\/p>\n<p>Calling it a \u201cyolk-shell structure,\u201d researchers seal commercially available single silicon nanoparticles in \u201cconformal, thin, self-supporting carbon shells, with rationally-designed void space between the particles and the shell.\u201d\u00a0 When charged, the silicon nanoparticles swell to fill the carbon shells, just the right size to contain the expansion and not burst.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers claim 2,800 milli-Amp hours per gram at 10 to 20 times normal discharge (C)*, 1,000 charge\/discharge cycles so far with 74-percent capacity retention, and 99.84-percent Coulombic efficiency, or the percentage of charge retained by the battery \u2013 very high indeed for this system.<\/p>\n<p>An in-situ Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) was used to observe the changes in the silicon yolks and carbon shells during charging and discharging, showing the effects of &#8220;lithiation&#8221; or infusing the shell with charged lithium. \u00a0This would normally lead to sub-nano-scale cracking of the anode, but in this case leaves the structure undamaged and ready for more full charges.<\/p>\n<p>As explained in the abstract of the team&#8217;s research, \u201cIn this new design, lithium ions flow from the cathode through the electrolyte, diffuse through the carbon shells, and enter the silicon\u2014which can hold <em>ten times<\/em> as many lithium ions as carbon alone. By leaving just the right amount of space, the lithiated silicon nanoparticles swell to fill, but not burst, the carbon shell. The result?
