Innovation Hangar Alpha will house the VC2 Volocopter, successor to the VC1 and improved in many ways, including three pilates balls for bouncing your landing on.\u00a0 The VC1 was the first \u201cpurely electrically powered, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft and flew last October. \u00a0At least the pilot is under the spinning rotors on this version.<\/p>\n

Seriously, the designs represent a clever and elegant design concept, which embodies ease of control and simplicity of operation. \u00a0The software which enables smooth flight and nuanced control has to be a marvel of programming.<\/p>\n

e-volo's VC2, a prime attraction at Innovation Hangar Alpha<\/p><\/div>\n

The VC2 is not only a more sophisticated design, but lighter and stronger. Starting in September, test flights will include extensive study of safety factors, motors, steering controls and battery management.<\/p>\n

Tests aim to develop a two-seat Volocopter which complies with regulations and which can demonstrate the following performance:<\/p>\n

\u2022 A speed of over 54 knots (100 kilometers per hour or 62 mph)<\/p>\n

\u2022 A minimum flight altitude of 6500 feet<\/p>\n

\u2022 A take-off weight of 450 kg (990 pounds)<\/p>\n

\u2022 More than one hour flight time<\/p>\n

Development will include a two-year flight test program with the LBA (German Federal Aviation Office) and the DULV (German Ultralight Aircraft Association).\u00a0 The group plans
\n\u201cautonomous flights over uninhabited areas for days on end\u201d to demonstrate reliability, controllability, and safety of the concept.<\/p>\n
