{"id":6317,"date":"2012-07-20T09:46:05","date_gmt":"2012-07-20T16:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=6317"},"modified":"2012-07-20T09:54:14","modified_gmt":"2012-07-20T16:54:14","slug":"chip-yates-becomes-worlds-fastest-person-in-an-electric-airplane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/chip-yates-becomes-worlds-fastest-person-in-an-electric-airplane\/","title":{"rendered":"Chip Yates Becomes World&#8217;s Fastest Person in an Electric Airplane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On July 19 at Inyokern Airport in California, Chip Yates and his Long-ESA electric airplane set an unofficial world\u2019s speed record for battery-powered flight, hitting 202.6 mph just before a dead cell in the battery pack forced an emergency landing.\u00a0 It was the airplane\u2019s second test flight.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Taxi Test of 258hp Electric Long-ESA!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wuWQfF_a-M8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Following a day of taxi tests, Chip, who has been taking flying lessons and recently achieved his Private Pilot\u2019s license, set out to see how fast his 258-horsepower mount could go.\u00a0 He has become the first person to break the 200 mph barrier for electric aircraft in level flight, beating the <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=3578\">previous record <\/a>by Hugues Duval at last year\u2019s Paris Air Show in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electravia.fr\/ElecEng.php\">Electravia-powered Cri-Cri<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0Duval managed to hit 175 mph on his run over the main runway at Le Bourget Airport.<\/p>\n<p>The same <a href=\"http:\/\/uqm.com\/\">UQM motor<\/a> in the Rutan-derived airplane powered his road-racing motorcycle last year, enabling him to hit over 200 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats and to set a world\u2019s record for an electric motorcycle topping Pikes Peak. \u00a0Note the hill climb cap Chip wears during taxi testing.<\/p>\n<p>As the press release relates, this motor has stood up to hard use. \u00a0&#8220;The feat marks the second time within the past 12 months that Yates has exceeded 200 MPH in an electric vehicle of his own design \u2013 the first being his road-racing superbike which earned 8 official FIM World Records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Sept, 2011 and currently holds the Guinness World Record title of &#8216;<em>World\u2019s Fastest Electric Motorcycle&#8217;<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Teaser: World&#039;s Fastest Electric Airplane! 202.6-MPH on July 19, 2012\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wPK7649SrDA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yates\u2019 organization, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightofthecentury.com\/\">The Flight of the Century<\/a>, commented on his hurried landing, artfully edited in the video to leave a viewer anxious about the outcome.\u00a0 \u201cYates barely made it over the threshold of Inyokern\u2019s 7100 foot runway 33 with no power available, he was still making the final turn to align with the runway at an elevation of 10 feet.
