As reported yesterday, the first day\u2019s competition was won by Markus Scherdel, test pilot for Solar Impulse.<\/p>\n<p>The second day\u2019s competition was a complete turnaround of day one\u2019s results, with Wolfgang Uhlig taking the crown and Markus sliding to fourth place. Most interesting, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diamondaircraft.com\/\">Diamond DA40 TDI<\/a>, a four-seat Diesel-powered aircraft flown by Daniel Hirth, took second place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6471\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6471\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6471\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6471\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6471\" title=\"GSC day two DA40\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-DA40-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-DA40-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-DA40-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-DA40.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DA40 begins takeoff roll while Stemme prepares for day two flight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A longer event than day one, the task required pilots to fly from Strausberg down the longest leg of a scalene triangle to Klix, a village in Saxony. From there, they turned northwest to Finsterw Heinri and then sped north back to Strausberg to complete the 326.4 kilometer (202.4 mile) course.<\/p>\n<p>Uhlig\u2019s winning S10VT toured the triangle at 163.4 kilometers per hour (101.3 mph) while consuming a total of 202.8 kilowatt-hours of energy, achieving 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers (48 mpg). The DA40, a heavier airplane, managed 6.6 liter per 100 kilometers (35.6 mpg) at 195.8 k\/hr. (121.3 mph).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6472\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6472\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6472\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6472\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6472\" title=\"GSC day two lineup\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-lineup-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-lineup-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-lineup-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-lineup.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stemmes line up for a speed run around a triangular course<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Aside from the four-seater and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schempp-hirth.com\/index.php?id=126&amp;L=1&amp;tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=373&amp;tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=87&amp;cHash=8a5d51d766\">Arcus two-seat electric motorglider<\/a>, all competitors are either Stemme S10VTs or S6Ts. The Arcus did not start on day one, did start on day two, but weather conditions both days kept it from exploiting any thermals. Its battery allows it to climb to about 2,000 meters (6,500 feet), from where it can glide 100 kilometers (62 miles) \u2013 not enough to manage the entire course. We can hope that the clouds lift in the next few days.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6473\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6473\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6473\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6473\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6473\" title=\"GSC day two Arcus\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-Arcus-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-Arcus-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-Arcus-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GSC-day-two-Arcus.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6473\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cloudy skies ruined the day again for the electric Arcus<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Worse for the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdplanes.com\/sd1a.htm\"> SD-1 <\/a>team, the aircraft was grounded by German authorities, so could not compete (or even fly) at all. Organizers had \u201canticipated big potential\u201d from this small single seater, which is powered by a Briggs &amp; Stratton V-twin or a Czech-built JVC-360 (cc) engine, each capable of pulling the little airplane around at about 100 mph on under two gallons per hour.
