George wrote, \u201cWhile the electric Cessna program continues to advance under the leadership of Charlie Johnson and a new name, \u2018Beyond Aviation\u2019, we have continued our research into solar-electric hybrid propulsion in unmanned aircraft. At the early August 2012 AUVSI conference, my company, Bye Aerospace together with Silent Falcon UAS Technologies, unveiled a small solar-electric powered drone. The remarkable economics and technology is proven and the performance benefits have been demonstrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6524\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6524\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6524\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6524\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6524\" title=\"Silent_Falcon-004\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Silent_Falcon-004-528x321.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Silent_Falcon-004-528x321.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Silent_Falcon-004-300x182.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Silent_Falcon-004.jpg 784w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Silent Falcon with FalconVision extended for surveillance<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silentfalconuas.com\/index.html\">Silent Falcon\u2122<\/a> comes with three wings from 2.1 to 5.2 meters in span, the bigger wings slowing the craft down while giving it greater range. The short wing can keep the airplane aloft for six hours, while the longer wing reduces power needs enough to allow 14 hour missions. All within a 25 kilometer radius from the operator, based on the limits of high-frequency data transmission. Night flying is limited to four to six hours, based on wing configuration, because of the lack of solar range extension and reliance on its internal lithium batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the wing chosen, the airplane flies at 20-to-112 kilometers per hour (12.4 to 70 mph). Its very low noise and heat signature allows it to fly over a target area without detection and at loitering speeds that permit extended observation. Airplane lands on skid after sensor pod is retracted<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Thin-film photovoltaics come from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascentsolar.com\/\">Ascent Solar Technologies<\/a>, also a presenter at the CAFE Foundation\u2019s fourth annual Electric Aircraft Symposium, and a development partner in this enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>George Bye, Chairman and CEO of Bye Aerospace, said solar energy is a key component to several of Bye Aerospace\u2019s programs. \u201cOne concept currently in development, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.byeaerospace.com\/media\/1903\/bye_aerospace__ascent_solar_collaborate_with_the_department_of_defense.pdf\">Silent Guardian <\/a>(a larger, hybrid system) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), relies on thin film solar photovoltaics (PV), stored electric power and other technologies to enhance its potential for long endurance, quiet operations and low emissions,\u201d he said. \u201cWith Ascent Solar as a development partner, our development time should improve drastically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Controls for the Silent Falcon come from <a href=\"http:\/\/kuttatech.com\/UGCS.html#http:\/\/\">Kutta Technologies<\/a>, and use a NATO standardization agreement software, the STANAG 4586 protocol, to allow interoperability with varied fixed wing, rotary wing, and other UAVs in a given battle area. The same controls could be used to manage swarms of surveillance craft in a domestic emergency, such as forest fires or the aftermaths of hurricanes, tornadoes, or earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>An operator can monitor and control the small UAV from a back-packable handheld controller, or monitor aircraft status or sensor feedback through a wrist-mounted remote video terminal.<\/p>\n<p>The visuals sent back from the Silent Falcon will be captured by FalconVision\u2122, a dual-imaging, gyro stabilized, high-definition set of cameras that can work day or night to transmit real-time intelligence to ground controllers.
