She recently topped 216 miles per hour in KillaJoule, her streamlined electric sidecar motorcycle. Eva managed to come within three mph of the world record internal-combustion powered for sidecars on the salt flat.<\/p>\n<p>She also managed a world record for the flying mile, going through the traps at 191.488 mph \u2013 the record awaiting American Motorcycle Association certification.\u00a0 Overall, KillaJoule is the world\u2019s fourth fastest electric motorcycle, and Eva is headed back to Bonneville to attempt more records.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6770\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6770\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6770\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6770\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6770\" title=\"killajoule_eva\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/killajoule_eva-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/killajoule_eva-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/killajoule_eva-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/killajoule_eva.jpg 1229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eva with KillaJoule<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 250 HP battery-powered motorcycle had a measured top speed of 216.504 MPH and did set a new official world record for electric sidecar motorcycles of 191.488 MPH over the flying mile (pending AMA certification). KillaJoule is currently the world\u2019s fourth fastest electric. It won the \u201cFastest Sidecar Motorcycle\u201d Prize and the prestigious \u201cFemale Rider\u201d Award, created in 2006 by land speed record holder Erin Hunter \u201cto acknowledge the accomplishments of the women racers at Bonneville. It recognizes the characteristics of great racers such as competition, camaraderie, enthusiasm, dedication, humility, and tenacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"KillaJoule Electric Motorcycle, 216 MPH at Bonneville\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HiXMcaYP9Xc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to Eva\u2019s blog, \u201cKillaJoule competes as a \u2018sidecar motorcycle\u2019, which means that it has two wheels in line and one wheel off-set. It drives only on the rear wheel and steers with the front wheel. The very fastest record ever set with an internal combustion engine for this type vehicle is 219 mph. Eva is now very close to exceeding this internal combustion world record using battery power. Last time a battery-powered vehicle set an overall speed record was 1899, when the electric car<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/le-jamais-contente-first-land-speed-record\/23094\/\"> &#8216;La Jamais Contente&#8217;<\/a> was the world\u2019s fastest car at 62 MPH.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6771\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=6771\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6771\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6771\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6771\" title=\"the-first-world-land-speed-record-ev-12\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/the-first-world-land-speed-record-ev-12-528x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/the-first-world-land-speed-record-ev-12-528x350.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/the-first-world-land-speed-record-ev-12-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/the-first-world-land-speed-record-ev-12.jpg 529w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6771\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La Jamais Contente, the fastest electric car in the world in 1899<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Eva wired the 375 volt, 1,800 Amp, 214\u00a0pound battery pack made from 1,210 cordless tool cells manufactured by A123Systems, a <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=874\">grueling and meticulous process she demonstrated <\/a>at the 2010 Electric Aircraft Symposium, showing how she built a similar pack for her husband\u2019s drag-racing KillaCycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.evo-electric.com\/products\/electric-motors\/\">EVO Electric, Ltd.<\/a> supplies the AC motor and the 250+ HP inverters are made by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rinehartmotion.com\/ \"> Rinehart Motion Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the summer, Eva had inspired young women attending the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) girls\u2019 camp in Limestone, Maine.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mssm.org\/news\/get\/story\/110\/\">Meeting with 95 campers <\/a>after a day of racing at Loring Air Force Base, Evan and Bill \u201ccame to share their passion for science and engineering.\u201d Eva had set a new world record of 188 mph the previous Saturday and was ready to explain the science behind her efforts.<\/p>\n<p>One camper, Robin White, was enthused. \u201c\u2019The battery pack was awesome. The motorcycle looks like something that would take a lot of gas, so I was surprised that it could go so fast just on electricity.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFor the girls at camp, H\u00e5kansson left a lasting impression. \u2018I learned that if you set your mind to it, you can build anything; you can do anything,\u2019 said Allison Johnson, a returning MSSM camper from Winthrop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019I was surprised by Eva; she didn\u2019t look like the type of girl that would build a motorcycle and weld metal\u2019 camper Robyn White said. Indeed, with a stuffed rabbit named Bonnie S. Flats as co-pilot, H\u00e5kansson broke the mold of what some girls considered an adventurous engineer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreaking down barriers that keep girls from pursuing science and math is very much what MSSM summer camp strives to do.
