href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=6522\">Silent Falcon<\/a> unmanned aerial vehicle earlier this year at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.auvsi.org\/Home\/\">Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI)<\/a> meeting.\u00a0 He has two other relatively low-cost but highly capable offerings which could stretch the limits of unmanned aerial system (UAS) capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The first, the Starlight program, involves lifting a variable geometry, solar-powered airplane to great heights with a balloon, hovering with it for up to four months, and releasing it when needed to allow refurbishing, refitting and relaunching.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7289\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7289\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7289\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7289\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7289\" title=\"bye starlight 2\" hybrid arrangement<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This two-stage system provides the same kind of surveillance offered by a satellite, but at a much lower cost.\u00a0 The balloon is a static device, used only to provide the altitude necessary, and the aircraft needs to provide power sufficient to allow station keeping and run its sensor systems for the period it is at altitude.\u00a0 When launched, the nose and tail-mounted electric motors power the airplane on its way.\u00a0 It can slide its wing panels along a track in the fuselage, reducing area to one high-aspect ratio panel for speed, or expand wing area to three panel width, or chord, slowing the craft but gathering more solar energy to run motors and sensors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7290\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7290\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7290\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7290\" id=\"caption-attachment-7290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Starlight with narrow-wing, high-speed configuration&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_7291\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption id=\"caption-attachment-7291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">and with wide-chord, light-gathering configuration<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When attached to the airship, the solar panels can articulate up to +\/- 50 degrees to optimize solar collection.\u00a0 The motors are also articulated, and can pivot up to 30 degrees to enhance station keeping.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7292\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Starlight has nose and tail-mounted vectored motors which can pivot up to 30 degrees<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bye acts as a subcontractor to <a href=\"www.GlobalNearSpace.com\">Global Near Space Services (GNSS)<\/a> for the aircraft part of the Starlight system, designated a \u201cstratospheric recovery vehicle\u201d or SRV detachable UAS. \u00a0This is all part of a U. S. Navy research contract to GNSS.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 1 of Bye\u2019s effort completed conceptual design and \u201csystems trade studies\u201d in 2010.\u00a0 Phase 2 includes detail design of the aircraft and design and assembly of a 40-percent scale SRV test vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Bye lists the following specifications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>25.6 feet wingspan<\/li>\n<li>27.8 feet length<\/li>\n<li>854 pounds gross weight<\/li>\n<li>5 g limit load with 1.4 safety factor<\/li>\n<li>Thin-film photovoltaics for solar energy collection (probably supplied by partner Ascent Solar).<\/li>\n<li>Light-weight Li-ion batteries for energy storage<\/li>\n<li>Limited redundancy autopilot<\/li>\n<li>Test payload up to 50 pounds and 100 Watts of power<\/li>\n<li>Test altitudes from under 15,000 feet and reaching operational altitudes to 65,000 feet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Scaling things up to the anticipated 100-percent, the airplane would have a wingspan of 64 feet, and a length of 69.5 feet.\u00a0 Weight would be well over one ton.<\/p>\n<p>The self-sufficiency and persistence of Starlight will probably make it useful to the military, but it has civilian purposes, too, in observing climate effects, droughts, wildfires, and even wildlife migrations.\u00a0 It can be used as a communications platform and provide a higher level of air traffic control with direct observation of situations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7293\" style=\"width: 507px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7293\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7293\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7293\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7293\" title=\"bye silent guardian 1\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/bye-silent-guardian-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/bye-silent-guardian-1.jpg 497w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/bye-silent-guardian-1-300x138.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bye Silent Guardian, a jet\/solar\/electric hybrid<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A second offering from Bye Aerospace, the Silent Guardian Solar-Electric Hybrid Remote Piloted Aircraft (SEH-RPA) uses a Williams International turbofan engine to launch and climb to high altitude, and solar-electric power to loiter at its surveillance level.\u00a0 At that height, the turbine shuts down and thin-film solar cells power the small electric motors on the tips of the wings and the V-tail.\u00a0 Asked about the apparent small size of the motors and multi-bladed propellers, George Bye referred to the cleanliness of the design, and without providing a hard number, explained that even a 20:1 lift-to-drag ratio would generate only 200 pounds drag on the 4,000 pound airplane.\u00a0 (4,000 pounds is the fuel weight of the Predator B, by comparison.)\u00a0 If each motor produced 50 pounds of thrust, the airplane could maintain level flight all day, and into the night on battery power.\u00a0 Several model aircraft motors can produce 50 to 100 pounds thrust with less advanced propellers.<\/p>\n<p>Acording to Bye Aerospace, \u201cPotential government applications include border patrol and homeland security, search and rescue, visual and thermal reconnaissance and forward air control.
