{"id":7302,"date":"2012-12-12T16:07:43","date_gmt":"2012-12-12T23:07:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=7302"},"modified":"2012-12-12T16:07:43","modified_gmt":"2012-12-12T23:07:43","slug":"eup-makes-first-canadian-electric-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/eup-makes-first-canadian-electric-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"eUP Makes First Canadian Electric  Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John McClintock and Randy Rauck have been developing an electrically-powered hang-glider \u201ctrike\u201d for the last year, and Saturday, December 8, Rauck took their Green1 battery-powered hang-glider skyward \u2013 Canada\u2019s first electric flight.<\/p>\n<p>Taking off at approximately 10:00 a. m., Rauck flew a smooth circuit of the<strong> <\/strong>Pitt Meadows airport, southwest of Vancouver, B. C.\u00a0 The pair have been bench and ground testing their Electravia motor, controller and battery pack as part of their creation of eUP, a firm dedicated to making electric flight possible in ultralight aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Canadian Electric Aeroplane \/ Airplane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HKmTnPkxHPc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In eUP\u2019s press release, McClintock says, \u201cThis is a very exciting day in Canadian aviation history. While eUP will offer this system on other aircraft, right now the state-of-the-art in electric flight is a perfect match for self-launch soaring gliders such as hang gliders and paragliders. eUP is proud to be the first to fly on battery-power in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While technically not the first electric flight in Canada, that honor taken by Csaba Lemak with his powered parachute in 2006, \u201cThis,\u201d according to eUP, \u201cis the first flight of a Canadian manufactured electric aircraft, and eUP contends it is also the first electric aircraft flight in Canada. \u00a0eUP will be demonstrating the aircraft across western Canada and the United States early in 2013, and expect interest to be high in the Green1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rauck and McClintock, both licensed private pilots with 35-year aviation backgrounds, were motivated to \u201ccreate an affordable, fun, environmentally-friendly aircraft with a clean, smooth and quiet flight experience.\u00a0 The YouTube video shows that they accomplished their objectives, with a very quiet, smooth turn around Pitt Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>They look forward to soaring their creation, a combination of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northwing.com\/index.htm\">North Wing trike and a Solairus 17 wing<\/a> chosen for its good sink rate and portability.\u00a0 They used Electravia\u2019s GMPE 102 motor, an E-Prop, and a proven set of components, including Electravia\u2019s 53-Amp-hour (4 kilowatt-hour) Kokam battery pack.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7305\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7305\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7305\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7305\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7305\" title=\"eup trike 1\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/eup-trike-1-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/eup-trike-1-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/eup-trike-1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/eup-trike-1.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">eUP&#8217;s electric trike with Solairus 17 wing in a pretty, but cold setting<\/p><\/div>\n<p>eUP announces that it will be named the North American distributor for<a href=\"http:\/\/www.electravia.fr\/\"> Electravia products<\/a>, broadening the market for Anne Lavrand\u2019s products and probably helping develop new platforms for electric flight.<\/p>\n<p>As John points out, \u201cBeing soaring pilots, we crave more performance \u2026 but what is out there in production runs for ultralight sailplanes?\u00a0 Nothing comes to mind!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seeking to overcome that, the partners are looking at the Atos hang-glider, a high-aspect ratio wing with excellent soaring capabilities, \u201ctwo excellent-looking trikes that have recently emerged from the testing phase,\u201d powered paraglider trikes, and possible conversion of a Moni they have in the yard.\u00a0 John says it\u2019s, \u201cNot a very original idea,\u201d but looks forward to learning from it.\u00a0 Even a two-seater is possible in the future.<\/p>\n<p>For the near future, though, \u201cRandy will be in charge of sales and marketing while I continue with product development.\u201d\u00a0 We wish them luck.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Feup-makes-first-canadian-electric-flight%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John McClintock and Randy Rauck have been developing an electrically-powered hang-glider \u201ctrike\u201d for the last year, and Saturday, December 8, Rauck took their Green1 battery-powered hang-glider skyward \u2013 Canada\u2019s first electric flight.
