As shown in the video and pictures from Maciej, the flight looked smooth, lasted 20 minutes and achieved an altitude of 250 meters (820 feet).\u00a0 The airplane landed with 30 percent of its battery\u2019s energy still available despite the climb and -17\u00b0 C\/-14\u00b0 F temperature.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7382\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7382\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7382 aligncenter\" title=\"AOS-71 1\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/AOS-71-1-528x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/AOS-71-1-528x350.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/AOS-71-1-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/AOS-71-1.jpg 1001w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_7382\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 538px;\">\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Wind chill factor on wing runner must have been numbing<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>An outgrowth of the Universities\u2019 ultralight glider program, the 16.6 meter span sailplane has an empty weight of 385 kilograms (847 pounds) ready-to-fly, including 80 kilograms (176 pounds) of lithium-polymer batteries.\u00a0 Its carbon fiber structure allows a never-exceed velocity (Vne) of 220 kilometers per hour (136.4 mph).\u00a0 The AOS-71 has a best lift-to-drag ratio of 30:1 at 110 km\/hr (68.2 mph) and a stall speed of 78 km\/hr (48.4 mph).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7383\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7383\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7383\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7383\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7383\" title=\"AOS-71 2\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/AOS-71-2-528x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/AOS-71-2-528x350.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/AOS-71-2-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/AOS-71-2.jpg 936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Into the gloom and a brisk headwind<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A full test program will take place in the spring, when Maciej promises a \u201cnormal\u201d exploration of battery performance.<\/p>\n<p>As explained in the newsletter <a href=\"http:\/\/aim2.dlr.de\/fileadmin\/user_upload\/news\/AIM__1stNewsletter_final.pdf\"><em>Advanced In-Flight Measurement 2<\/em><\/a>, \u201cThe AOS-71 program, initiated \u00a0by the intercollegiate team, is a direct continuation of the ULS (Ultra Light Glider) program which is coordinated in The Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering of Warsaw University of Technology for more than 30 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A descendant of the PW-6, the AOS-71 inherits its main aerodynamic and structural features, with lighter carbon-fiber structures replacing the original\u2019s glass-fiber units. \u00a0\u00a0According to AIM2, \u201cThe wing geometry has not changed but the new design is based on a carbon\/epoxy composite structure (the \u00a0PW 6 was built with glass fiber). \u00a0 [This probably accounts for its nearly equal weight with the PW-6 without motor and batteries.] \u00a0The AOS design is based \u00a0on two \u00a0engine configurations: conventional piston and electric engine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea behind the AOS-71 project is the allocation of a test bed for many experiments in the area of aeronautical engineering. \u00a0The main fields of operation of the AOS-71 motorglider are studies and applications of innovative, light composite airframes; testing of damage detection methods and their propagation observations in composite structures as well as the design and construction of ecological electric drives; onboard data acquisition and telemetric \u00a0tests, research and development of new measurement methods and equipment and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/view\/j\/meceng.2012.lix.issue-2\/v10180-012-0009-y\/v10180-012-0009-y.xml\">flying wind tunnel for airfoils and small flying objects<\/a>. Other objectives of this project are the preparation, testing and validation of numerical models as well as testing the effectiveness of signals reception for navigation systems. \u00a0A modular structure of the cockpit allows the installation of new equipment and eases the preparation of the motorglider for other in-flight tests.
