Figure in background gives sense of craft&#8217;s near model-airplane scale<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Problems with the in-line landing gear persisted, though, and the team spent the next several weeks modifying a nose gear that needed strengthening.\u00a0 They replaced a weak aluminum piece with titanium and made changes to the retraction mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>On the airplane&#8217;s third flight April 13, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric \u00a0noted, \u201cWe still had a little problem with that damn front,\u201d referring to the cables that lower and retract the nose gear.\u00a0 The fact that the cables have been on the plane since its construction might have had something to do with the ensuing touchdown where the nose rubbed the ground.\u00a0 \u00a0The minor dustup might have been amplified by the pilot\u2019s taildragger reflexes &#8211; he flies an RV-7 &#8211; in raising the nose for the landing, \u00a0apparently enough to cause the canard to drop and stress the nose gear \u201ca little more than you should.\u201d\u00a0 Laude brushes the consequences \u00a0aside.\u00a0 \u201c\u2026So we had to redo a little resin, but really nothing serious.
