{"id":7675,"date":"2013-04-21T19:53:30","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T02:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=7675"},"modified":"2013-04-21T19:53:30","modified_gmt":"2013-04-22T02:53:30","slug":"graphexeter-aims-for-power-with-transparency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/graphexeter-aims-for-power-with-transparency\/","title":{"rendered":"GraphExeter Aims for Power with Transparency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It doesn\u2019t sound much like dispassionate, objective scholarly reporting, but the University of Exeter in England headlines its report on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/news\/featurednews\/title_281702_en.html\">University-created breakthrough material<\/a>, \u201cRevolutionary new device joins world of smart electronics.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7676\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7676\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7676\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7676\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7676\" title=\"graphexeter 1\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/graphexeter-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/graphexeter-1.gif 500w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/graphexeter-1-300x266.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#8217;s more to the transparent film than meets the eye in this schematic diagram of Exeter&#8217;s see-through solar material<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Layering graphene and the GraphExeter, a material obviously headed for product marketing, gives a \u201cnew flexible, transparent, photosensitive device\u201d that can lead to solar-powered clothing able to charge the wearer\u2019s cell phone, \u201cintelligent\u201d windows that can \u201charvest light and display images,\u201d and just maybe (in this writer\u2019s dreams) help power electric cars and airplanes.<\/p>\n<p>GraphExeter, Exeter claims, is the best known room temperature transparent conductor and with graphene &#8211; the thinnest conductive material &#8211; the pair make for great potential. \u00a0 Researchers \u00a0developed \u00a0GraphExeter by sandwiching molecules of ferric chloride in between two layers of graphene.<\/p>\n<p>According to the University, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/emps.exeter.ac.uk\/physics-astronomy\/staff\/sr330\">Saverio Russo,<\/a> Professor of Physics at the University of Exeter said: \u2018This new flexible and transparent photosensitive device uses graphene and graphExeter to convert light into electrical signals with efficiency comparable to that found in opaque devices based on graphene and metals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7677\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7677\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7677\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7677\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7677\" title=\"graphexeter 2\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/graphexeter-2-528x320.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/graphexeter-2-528x320.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/graphexeter-2-300x182.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/graphexeter-2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Saveria Russo and Dr. Monica Cracuin adjust an experiment in their laboratory hallway<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;\u2019We are only just starting to explore the interfaces between different materials at very small scales and, as this research shows, we are revealing unique properties that we never knew existed. Who knows what surprises are just around the corner.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the layers are made of graphene and the Exeter material, the material is only a few atoms thick and thus ultra-lightweight, but can match heavier, opaque solar cells in their efficiency at converting photons to energy. Because the material contains no metal, it avoids the haziness that prevents such materials from being totally transparent and thus allows the graphene and GraphExeter sandwich to detect light from the entire visible light spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>This work was financially supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).<\/p>\n<p>Findings by the Exeter research team, including\u00a0 Freddie Withers,\u00a0Thomas Hardisty Bointon, Monica Felicia Craciun, and\u00a0Saverio Russo\u00a0appear in the journal <em>ACS Nano<\/em> for April 19.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/adma.201200489\/abstract\">The abstract<\/a> includes a somewhat proud conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransparent conductors based on few-layer graphene\u00a0(FLG) intercalated with ferric chloride (FeCl3) have an outstandingly low sheet resistance and high optical transparency. FeCl3-FLGs outperform the current limit of transparent conductors such as indium tin oxide, carbon-nanotube films, and doped graphene materials.
