{"id":7754,"date":"2013-05-15T10:20:38","date_gmt":"2013-05-15T17:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=7754"},"modified":"2013-05-15T13:41:17","modified_gmt":"2013-05-15T20:41:17","slug":"eurosport-crossover-sports-many-tricks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/eurosport-crossover-sports-many-tricks\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurosport Crossover Sports Many Tricks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019re used to seeing motorgliders which pop an engine or motor up on a tall stalk behind the cockpit, then retract it into the slim tailboom for minimum drag.\u00a0 Why not do the same with two electric motors on each side of the airplane, tucking them in a slender fuselage for soaring?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Crossover\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/88Exy9dvNSk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Emails with Eurosport\u2019s Tom Leite and perusal of the Portuguese firm\u2019s web site and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurosportaircraft.com\/attachments\/article\/44\/BROCHURA2.pdf\">on-line brochure<\/a> verified that almost everything on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurosportaircraft.com\/\">Crossover motorglider<\/a> is electric and retractable.<\/p>\n<p>Tom notes, for instance, \u201cOur motor\/props fold into the fuselage: [they are] 3-phase PMSM motors up to 40Kw at takeoff each.\u201d\u00a0 In the video, see the long, spar web-like structure with lightening holes that separates the two motors as they slide into and out of the fuselage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur wing span is set from 9.6 to 15 meters and is electrically operated.\u201d\u00a0 Tom refers to the special version that will have extendable and retractable wings, with tip segments sliding out from the 9.6 meter center section to their standard-class sailplane full span.\u00a0 This has been a dream of sailplane pilots for years, discussed in <em>Soaring<\/em> magazine even 30 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, the airplane can be flown with fixed short or long spans depending on the chosen \u201cmission\u201d for the day.<\/p>\n<p>Crossover has other electrically-operated functions, including dual Fowler flaps, landing gear, and even the large canopy that opens to permit access to the low slung seats.<\/p>\n<p>That seating was tried by one and all at the airplane\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pt-pt.facebook.com\/Eurosportaircraft?filter=1\">recent showing at Friedrichshafen<\/a>, including many in wheel chairs.\u00a0 Considering that many light aircraft involve difficult access for even able people, this would be a big selling point.<\/p>\n<p>The airplane\u2019s flexibility is furthered by the multiple ways in which it can mount varied powerplants.\u00a0 Tom says. \u00a0\u201cWe use twin Slovenian [motors with] 40 kilowatts take off power each (same as the Pipistrel Taurus).\u201d \u00a0The anticipated six meter per second (1,182 feet per minute) climb should allow flying from small fields.<\/p>\n<p>Its empty weight with no batteries fits well into Light Sport Aircraft standards in America and ULM criteria in Europe.\u00a0 Standard batteries add 60 kilograms (132 pounds) and provide 9 kilowatt hours of energy.\u00a0 Each of four battery packs has an included battery management system (BMS) and allow up to 60 minutes of powered flight.\u00a0 In the range extender version, batteries will add only 15 kg. and provide 2.25 Kwh.\u00a0 The range extender adds 45 kg. (90 pounds).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7757\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7757\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7757\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7757\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7757\" title=\"crossover right rear quarter\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/crossover-right-rear-quarter-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/crossover-right-rear-quarter-528x297.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/crossover-right-rear-quarter-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/crossover-right-rear-quarter.jpg 910w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rear quarter view highlights electrically-operated dual Fowler flaps, retractable motors, landing gear, and clever wing-fuselage intersection<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tom adds details on standard and hybrid operation. \u201cOur Project designed MTOW is 600 kg., which means we could be at max. with 180 kg. of batteries for up to 3 hours powered flight. \u00a0[In the hybrid version], battery C rating is much higher, as we use it for takeoff and then recharge it again in flight.
