Sunnyvale, CA 94089<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But the battery manufacturer has two first-generation product offerings with volumetric energy densities of 580 Watt-hours and 600 Watt-hours per liter.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Most lithium batteries fall into a range from 250-500 Wh\/l., putting the new cells at the upper limit of such batteries.\u00a0 Both Amprius batteries are now in production and available to original equipment manufacturers, ready for use in smartphones and tablets.<\/p>\n<p>According to<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2013\/05\/amprius-20130521.html\"> Green Car Congress<\/a><\/em>, \u201cThe company has also demonstrated greater than 650 and 700 Wh\/L batteries with its second-generation and third-generation technology platforms. Amprius plans to begun pilot production of its second-generation batteries later this year.\u201d\u00a0 First-generation batteries are made with silicon anodes: silicon nanowire anodes will appear in the subsequent generations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7773\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7773\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7773\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7773\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7773\" title=\"amprius battery plan\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/amprius-battery-plan-528x358.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/amprius-battery-plan-528x358.png 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/amprius-battery-plan-300x203.png 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/amprius-battery-plan.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7773\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amprius&#8217; battery plan showing projected increase energy density, battery life<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Professor Yi Cui helped develop Amprius\u2019 technology at Stanford University and helped found the company.\u00a0 He has spoken at several CAFE Foundation Electric Aircraft Symposia, where he explained the challenges of creating a 10X silicon battery.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of energy density, silicon has more than 10x the theoretical capacity of carbon (4,200 mAh\/g compared to 370 mAh\/g), charging a lithium silicon cell to expand up to 400 percent, leading to internal fracturing and destroying the battery in a few cycles.\u00a0 Amprius\u2019 answer is to use a new, nanostructured silicon-based anode material to counter such swelling and add to battery life.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the new technology and the milestones achieved so far is spelled out in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.eere.energy.gov\/vehiclesandfuels\/pdfs\/merit_review_2012\/energy_storage\/es126_stefan_2012_p.pdf\">2012 presentation<\/a> for the U. S. Department of Energy.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/eesage.com\/pages\/13690233-electronics-weekly-news-materials-r-and-d-globalpress-summit\">Electronics Weekly<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>reports, \u201cAmprius, \u00a0the Stanford University spin-out specializing in battery technology, has got its first products out according to the company\u2019s founder, Prof Yi Cui, Associate Professor at Stanford University\u2019s Material Science and Engineering department speaking to the recent Globalpress Summit in Santa Cruz. \u201cThe first generation of product is ready right now,\u201d Cui told EW, adding that production was currently \u201con a small scale.\u201d Cui is applying nanoscale technology to batteries targeting the development of high energy batteries, transparent batteries, printed energy storage devices on paper textile and sponge, transparent conducting electrodes and water nanofilters for killing pathogens.
